This area was first settled in 1770 with agriculture and lumber being their primary resources. Mills thrived here and many drew their power from Panther Pond. The town was established and officially recognized as Raymond in 1803, named for Captain William Raymond of Massachusetts and his troops.
Exploring Raymond Maine
The legendary 19th-century author of The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne, lived in Raymond from about the age of 9 or 10 years old. He lived here with his siblings and widowed mother from about 1812 until 1825 and would later go on to write about his adventures as a boy, hiking in the Maine woods and fishing in the nearby lake.
Hawthorne House was built by Nathaniel’s uncle in 1813. The house has been owned and lovingly cared for by The Hawthorne Community Association since 1922. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and used for social and cultural events throughout the year.
