Sabattus History
The area was first settled in 1774 and became known as Webster around 1840, named for the great orator Daniel Webster. It wasn’t until 1971 that this mill town officially became Sabattus in honor of a former local Anasagunticook Chief.
In 1869 the Webster Rubber Company Plant was built and used as a woolen mill drawing its power from the nearby lake. The building was converted in 1922 for the production of rubber used in making shoes. The local Sabattus Historical Society helps preserve the history of the area and is well worth a visit.
Exploring Sabattus Maine
The local water source that the early mills used to draw their power from is Sabattus Pond, also known as Sabattus Lake. This lake is quite shallow considering that at its center it is only about 19 feet deep and only averages about 14 feet deep throughout. However, there is a public boat launch here and it is a popular vacation spot.
Sabattus Pond has much to offer whether you are a resident or a visitor: swimming, fishing (and ice fishing during the winter season), boating, and bird watching (especially Loons). And there are many vacation rentals available here.
Another popular body of water in Sabattus is Sand Pond. This small lake was originally called Little Hancock Pond by early settlers from Denmark. Later it would be referred to as Walden Pond because of a girls camp that was established on its shores during the summer of 1917. It still is a beautiful spot to visit and swim, fish, have a picnic, and even hike on the nearby trails.
Martin’s Point at 72 Lake Street is another popular spot to enjoy your day swimming, fishing, boating, and picnicking. And there is a boat launch here as well.
If you’re interested in birdwatching, drive over to nearby Lewiston and visit their Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary. Here you will discover a peaceful 450-acre preserve where you can picnic, hike, and bird watch. This beautiful area is open year-round and offers visitors the opportunity to sled, ice skate, and cross country ski during the winter months.
