Exploring Topsham Maine

Natural Features for Fun and Relaxation

That mention of a river brings us to take a look at all of the wonderful natural features this area has to offer. And some of these are near historic sites that help you to create unique adventures, especially when traveling with kids. The river I just mentioned is the Androscoggin that winds its way from its beginning in Errol, New Hampshire, flowing south until it heads east into Maine right over by Bethel. Its 178-mile course changes right here as its waters flow into Merrymeeting Bay right by the John L. Baxter State Forest that’s a short drive out of town.

The bay is actually quite a unique formation that some refer to as an inland delta. It’s easy to get excited about this natural feature as six rivers flow into the bay. This brings with it an abundance of wildlife, including fish and birds. All these joined river waters become the lower Kennebec River, passing by the major ship-builder, Bath Iron Works, on its way to the Atlantic. At that point the river is wide and a vision to behold.

About a half hour’s drive away in Phippsburg, you’ll find the scenic and amazing Popham Beach State Park! It’s a long, wide stretch of beach that is seasonally shaped by storms and shifting tides. Most years this action creates warm pools and streams that kids love! And at low tide, you can walk out to one of the Fox Islands. Caution is advised as riptides and cross currents are risky. Be sure to visit the website to read all that Popham offers aside from swimming, including riding your horse there during the winter if you have a permit.

A short drive past Popham Beach brings you to the historic site of Fort Popham with features that capture the imagination. There’s a beach that’s friendly for leashed dogs. That is, if you can find parking. It’s well worth trying to locate some as the beach is peaceful and picturesque.

We’re not yet done with beaches! After all, that’s one reason why people escape here or decide to move as they long to be by the ocean for more than a day here and there. On the next peninsula over you’ll find Reid State Park, also a quick half-hour drive from Topsham. This has long stretches of wide sand beach. Two in fact, plus a separate pond that’s great for little ones as it gets warm. Plus, the main beach areas can have some powerful surf.

Reid has picnic areas, including some next to inlets of the Sheepscot River. These offer wading, crab-watching, and all the delights that come with losing track of time while at the beach. Plus, there are ledges to scramble over, gaining a grand view from above.
Thomas Point Beach is a quick 10 to 15-minute drive from Topsham, as it’s down the road from Brunswick that’s just across the river. It has a protected tidal beachfront and scenic marsh area, as well as campsites! It’s also the setting of concerts and festivals, adding that extra special feeling you get when attending an event by the shore.

Retail and Other Forms of Recreation

Now, if your idea of recreation includes retail pursuits, you’re in luck here in Topsham! Topsham Fair Mall is like a shopping village. It features Maine and family-owned businesses and retailers along with national chains. There are plenty of places to eat. This mall is spread out, making it easy to find parking and that sure is nice.
Be sure to make a point of looking at the local and Maine-owned stores like Reny’s that is indeed the adventure it says it is. You can also get groceries, and find building supplies, pet stores, sporting goods, things to do with vehicles, fitness centers, a movie theater, and on and on.

Topsham Fair is one of Maine’s annual summer agricultural fairs and so much more! That means there’s harness racing and a demolition derby along with rides, exhibits, and all kinds of competitions.

Heading across the river again into Brunswick, you’ll find more retail relief with shops and restaurants galore in the center of town, and another mall or too outside the town center. Also on the Brunswick side of the river, you’ll find the Androscoggin River Bicycle Path that people use for running and walking. Bowdoin College, widely celebrated for its academic excellence, is nearby, along with its museum featuring socially relevant exhibits.

The key is to plan ahead regardless of the season you’re visiting as coastal Maine can be busy year-round!
