Warren is a small town with a population of 5,000 in Knox County, not far from the state capital in Augusta. This small community with its rich history and great local schools lies on the Georges River and includes the villages of East Warren and South Warren.

The town is bordered by Waldoboro, Union, Camden, Rockland, Thomaston, and Cushing. The Maine State Prison (a minimum security Bolduc Correctional Facility) is located in South Warren and you can purchase wood products handcrafted by the inmates in nearby Thomaston.

As early as 1631, this area was a trading post for the Penobscot and Abenaki people. In 1729 Samuel Waldo received a 576,000-acre parcel of land, which included Warren and all of Knox County, in return for his help in regaining control of Maine from the British.

In 1736 Samuel Waldo went to Germany to recruit settlers for his land. This area that would become Warren also became home to many Scotch-Irish settlers trying to escape religious persecution.

Warren was officially established in 1776 and named after Dr. Joseph Warren, a notable figure during the times leading up to the American Revolutionary War. Dr. Warren was killed at The Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775.

The Warren Historical Society and Museum was formed in 1964 to help preserve the town’s many artifacts and documents. Today this collection contains 1,000’s of artifacts, photos, and documents related to the area and history of Warren.

Some of Warren’s rich history includes shipbuilding (especially between 1770 and 1850), the first sawmill in 1785 that drew its power from the St George River Falls, the quarries that produced granite and limestone, and The Georges River Canal which is one of the oldest canal systems in this country.
