Racks of clothes at a Bath thrift store

Racks of clothes at a Bath thrift store

While Bath has plenty of boutique clothing stores, high-end gift shops, and upscale home décor shopping options, some of us prefer perusing secondhand establishments—not only to keep our wallets happy but to enjoy the thrill of the chase.

Nothing can beat that serendipitous moment when your eyes alight on that perfect gift, apparel item, accessory, or objet d’art that you didn’t even realize you were looking for; best of all, you’re being planet-friendly by not perpetuating the proverbial retail cycle.

Why buy new if you don’t have to? There are so many shops to choose from in and around Bath that excel in curating “like new” collections of clothing, décor, furniture, and so much more—and besides, it’s fun!

J’adore Consignment

This orderly, well-stocked consignment boutique is a treasure trove of previously loved, quality clothing, furniture, home goods, décor, and antiques.

Featuring almost 2000 consigners, J’adore has enough inventory that the owners can curate only the best items for their customers’ shopping pleasure. The shop was named the 2022 Best Consignment Shop in the Times Record’s “Best of the Midcoast” awards—and one visit will show you why.

The friendly staff is helpful—always available to steer you in the right direction for a specific item or point out new arrivals.

Buy*Low Baby

As the name implies, this is a consignment shop for babies’ (and children’s) clothing, gear, and toys. But if you are a parent or caretaker of kids, you know that time is always at a premium…and shopping can be challenging, especially with toddlers.

But this store is different—because it involves online shopping only. Simply peruse the items at your leisure, follow the instructions to select what you want, and then pick up your order at their Commercial Street location. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy!

Goodwill Retail Store

Goodwill’s motto is “a hand up, not a hand-out;” this is the framework within which every Goodwill Store assists over 16,000 people per year with job training and life skills lessons.

Oh, yes—and the stores are also a fantastic way to get some really amazing deals on previously-loved clothing, home goods, kitchenware, furniture, rugs, lighting…and so much more.

Just under 10 minutes from Bath, the Brunswick store opened in 2014 and, like all other Goodwill stores, adds over 1,000 additional items to the shelves every single day.

Featuring “fresh and affordable women’s resale,” Estilo opened in 2006; the shop is located in Brunswick’s famous “Pumpkin House” landmark on beautiful Park Row, just 10 minutes from Bath.

All of the upscale clothing, accessories, and footwear here are carefully curated for style and quality, and you’ll find the inventory is rotated seasonally.

Some of the brands you’ll find at this trendy shop are Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, J. Crew, L.L. Bean, Patagonia, Lululemon, Nike, Uggs, Frye, and Birkenstock—and the overarching style vibe is “casual and comfy.”

Woods & Waters Gear Exchange

A consignment shop for women’s and men’s outdoor clothing and gear—brilliant! Especially in Maine, where myriad outdoor adventures lie around every rugged corner…and where there are adventures outside, more often than not, some form of not-so-cheap gear is involved. Why not buy secondhand?

Located 10 minutes from Bath’s center, Woods & Waters does the footwork for you, accepting only the most high-quality, like-new items before re-selling to you. Everything from outerwear (jackets, boots, vests) and layering apparel (tights, tops) to gear (backpacks, baby bicycle seats) and more can be found here; there are also plenty of brand-new accessories on offer.

No vintage boutique, this shop is overflowing with all manner of secondhand goods—and it will take both time and patience to see it all, along with a little persistence and willingness to get your hands dusty.

Just 11 minutes from Bath, Lucy Begonia’s is the type of spot you need to mosey through; if you rush, you’ll miss something for sure.

It’s far from being crowded or disorganized, though—don’t get me wrong. Everything is delightfully displayed, and you’ll find plenty here to entertain your eye: Furniture, dishware, décor, artwork, mirrors, collectibles, vintage clothing, and much, much more are all on offer at this 5,000-square-foot, multi-vendor shop.

7 Rivers ReStore

Habitat for Humanity’s 7 Rivers ReStore is more than worth the short, 11-minute drive from downtown Bath if you’ve got any home improvements on the horizon. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Always start your renovation or redecorating shopping at your local ReStore.

In addition to a wide and random variety of leftover or reclaimed construction supplies (doors, windows, tile, hardware, tools, countertops, shelving, and more), you’ll also find secondhand furniture, artwork, appliances, and lighting.

Proceeds from all ReStore sales go to Habitat’s affordable housing programs, so you can feel even better about your cut-rate purchases.

Bargain Basement Thrift Shop

Offering gently-used clothing, furniture, and home goods at prices far below retail, the Bargain Basement is one of the outreach programs at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, which is just over 15 minutes from Bath.

Run by good-hearted volunteers, this mission accepts donations from the community and sells them to the public, using proceeds to fund parish outreach programs; needy families can inquire about free shopping.

Sweet Repeats Children’s Consignment

To ensure quality, the staff at Sweet Repeats carefully sorts through all of the items offered for consignment (gear, footwear, toys, books, and clothing for newborns on up to size 12, as well as maternity items) before selling them.

Located just over 20 minutes from downtown Bath, Sweet Repeats is also a business with a big heart, donating upwards of $10,000 annually to charities that help needy children. Some of the top-notch brands you’ll find here are Patagonia, Garnet Hill, Hanna Anderson, Gymboree, L.L. Bean, North Face, and American Eagle—and at prices you’ll have to see to believe.
