Freeport Clam Flats

If you’re planning a trip to Freeport, Maine, then you’ve probably included a fair bit of shopping in your itinerary.

Home to the L.L. Bean Flagship Store and Outlet as well as dozens of other brand-name discount outlets, independent small businesses, boutiques, and eateries, Freeport is a bustling center of retail activity.

And while there are certainly plenty of higher-end accommodations in the area, if you’d like to save your pennies for all that retail therapy, camping is a sure-fire way to stay nearby (see driving times from Freeport center below in each listing) in a much more affordable fashion, without sacrificing too much on creature comforts.

Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Campground

Located at the Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment, this unique campground is part of an extensive campus that exists solely to educate folks about food and the way it is grown.

For over 50 years, all of the proceeds from the campground have gone to that mission. Wolfe’s Neck offers shady or sunny full hookup sites for campers, tents, and RVs; you can also rent large canvas tents with private outhouses, various sizes of cabins, and, new this year, A-frames.

There are many farm-centric activities for all ages, such as cow-milking tours, in-garden vegetable picking and tasting, and more.

Bicycles, kayaks, and canoes are available to rent, and there are over 3 miles of hiking trails on-site; pets are allowed, as long as they are leashed at all times.

Wolfe’s Neck also has a farm-to-table café, as well as a fully-stocked camp store.

The Desert of Maine Campground is pet-friendly, and the bright, airy bathhouses were constructed using pine and cedar—making them feel (and smell) quite spa-like.
