Many people familiar with the state of Maine associate the town of Freeport with big brand outlet shopping—and more specifically, as the home of L.L. Bean, whose flagship outdoor outfitting store holds court in the center of this shopping Mecca.
But not everyone who visits the Freeport area is interested in retail therapy, believe it or not, and there are plenty of other pastimes to consider…such as golfing, for example.
There is a panoply of offerings in and around Freeport for those of you that are looking to spend some quality time on the links; all of the options below are within a half-hour of the Freeport shopping district, and many are open to the public.

Maine Golf Center
Formerly known as the Freeport Country Club, the seasonal Maine Golf Center features a 9-hole, 36-par course with 2,939 yards of play.
Golfers enjoy the tight, fast fairways and affordable greens fees; the course is built around the landscape and provides an extra level of trickiness that ups the challenge factor. There is a short-game area with practice bunkers, as well as a putting green and a driving range at this well-groomed public course.

Brunswick Golf Club
Located less than 15 minutes from Freeport, this public, 18-hole championship course is meticulously kept and offers players beautiful, rolling greens lined by mature Maine forest. Each of the holes features four tees, providing players of all skill levels the chance to experience this affordable, popular golf venue.
Established in 1898, this 72-par course offers 6,601 yards of challenging play, complete with satisfying elevation changes and hazards. There are on-site golf pros available for lessons, a Trackman swing analysis launch monitor, and a full-service pub in the clubhouse offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Highland Green Golf Club
Even though this 9-hole, Scottish-style course is part of a gated, 55+ community, it is always open to the public. Built in 2004 and located just over 15 minutes from Freeport, this 35-par course seamlessly integrates with the rugged Maine topography, providing tasty challenges at every turn.
The fairways offer breathtaking views, and there are four tee placements for every hole, the longest of which offers 2,679 yards of play. There is a putting green, and a teaching pro is also available for instruction.

Toddy Brook Golf Course
Located just over 15 minutes from Freeport, the folks at Toddy Brook pride themselves on being one of the first to open and last to close north of the Portland area. Offering 18 holes of 71-par golf, this public course opened in 2002 as a 9-hole course; it now provides 6,214 yards of play (for the longest of the 5 tee placements).
There is a driving range, putting green, chipping/pitching area, and a golf school; there is also an on-site café open to the public (not just for the players) for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Portland Country Club
Founded in 1895, the “Portland” Country Club is actually in Falmouth Foreside, less than 20 minutes south of Freeport. A certified Audubon sanctuary, this club is one of the private venues on this list—so if you don’t know a member that can get you in, you’ll have to join PCC to play.
Your membership, however, gives you and your family access to much more than the Donald Ross-designed, 18-hole, 71-par course with its 6,466 yards of expansive greens and stunning views; members enjoy top-notch amenities like a pool, tennis courts, a pro shop, and both casual and fine dining options.

Another private club on this list, the 18-hole Woodlands Club is just over 20 minutes from Freeport and features 6,848 yards of par 72 golf.
Open all year, Woodlands is family-centric—offering eight sets of tees per hole—and in addition to the championship golf course offers members a host of upscale, year-round club amenities like five indoor tennis courts, a full-service fitness center with on-site trainers, indoor and outdoor (seasonal) pools, a pro shop, and several dining options.

Mere Creek Golf Course
Just 20 minutes from Freeport at Brunswick Landing, the Mere Creek Golf Course is on the former grounds of the Brunswick Naval Air Station. Founded in 1958, this reasonably-priced 9-hole, 35-par course used to be strictly for military personnel, but in 1991, it was made available to the public as well.
Mill Creek provides plenty of elevation changes along the 3,163-yard course, as well as a clubhouse, pro shop, putting green, and driving range.

Val Halla Golf & Recreation
Built in 1964, Val Halla is a semi-private, 18-hole, 72-par course that offers 6,595 yards of play. Tree-lined and traditional, the fairways and greens are quick and true; many offer interesting challenges and wonderfully tricky shots.
Val Halla is only 20 minutes from Freeport, and amenities for members include tennis and an on-site teaching pro; there is also a driving range, putting green, clubhouse, and a well-stocked pro shop as well as a full-service restaurant and bar.

Falmouth Country Club
This storied, private country club offers 18 holes of championship golf and the course offers 7,080 yards of 72-par play when using the longest of the five tees. Established in 1988 and less than 25 minutes from Freeport, FCC is now known in the golf world as “Maine’s premier competitive venue” and offers a gorgeous practice facility, driving range, putting green, top-notch pro shop, and two year-round Trackman 4 simulators.
Members also enjoy a host of high-end amenities like four tennis courts, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a pool, a playground, a clubhouse, and both casual and fine dining options.

Fast and well-tended, the 9-hole, 70-par Apple Valley Golf Course was built in 1960 and offers extremely reasonable greens fees. The historic, 200-year-old clubhouse houses a lounge, café, and pro shop.
