Mens' shirts in a Kennebunk, ME thrift shop

An obvious truth about consignment and thrift shopping is that the more affluent the store’s location is, the more upscale the goods on offer will be; I have found this to be so in Kennebunk, Maine.

Most of the in-town consignment shop offerings fall squarely into the boutique category, regardless of whether they are selling clothing, home goods, or antiques.

There are also plenty of other options nearby, some of which provide no-frills, secondhand shopping experiences for less-choosy bargain hunters willing to spend a bit more travel time; after all, if you’re a fan of thrift shopping, it’s all about the thrill of the hunt—am I right?

Outta the Box

All proceeds at this fun little store go to The New School in Kennebunk, an “incubator for environmental awareness and student involvement.” Relying completely on donations, Outta the Box resells high-quality items in tip-top condition like clothing for the whole family, furniture, dishware, décor, books, accessories, lighting, artwork, jewelry, and much more.

I scored a set of 14 purple glass dessert plates for a song last year—and a Stephen King hardcover, to boot.

Fresh Start Boutique

Fresh Start is my favorite women’s secondhand clothing haunt; I try to stop in often, because there are always new items, and I never leave empty-handed. Racks are first organized by type/style, and each is then sorted by color within each size range.

How helpful is that? You’ll find brands like Chico’s, L.L. Bean, Gap, Talbot’s, Levi’s, and J. Crew—and every item is carefully reviewed before being accepted for resale.

You’ll even come across never-worn pieces here, and you can round out your look with jewelry, handbags, shoes, scarves, and more. There is on-street parking as well as a large lot behind the shop; the staff is helpful and friendly—and the music is always good, too.

Selling secondhand clothing for the whole family, footwear, home décor, jewelry, accessories, collectibles, and more, the Budget Box takes in (and waves goodbye to) many items every week, so it would behoove you to shop often.

Just think—you’re saving oodles of money while helping those in need. So, head to the Budget Box and put a win-win spin on your next shopping spree!

The Kennebunk ReStore—as with all ReStore locations—is run completely by volunteers and sells a wide variety of gently-used home-building materials, furniture, appliances, hardware, tools, and more.

Perfect for a budget renovation, quick room refresh, or last-minute repair, you should always start at ReStore before heading to the big box home stores. Trust me—your wallet will thank you!

Yesterdays 2

If you collect sports memorabilia and cards (or any other trading cards), old and new comic books, vintage video games, or vinyl records, make a point of stopping into Yesterdays 2.

The shop owners are friendly and extremely knowledgeable; satisfied customers frequently comment on the variety and quality of the store’s collection as well as the affordable prices.

The well-organized shop is all but hidden in a little strip mall-type building, right next to a flower shop and below the local driving school—so keep your eyes peeled.

Gold Dust & Rouge Inc.

Another mention-worthy spot for secondhand collectibles and jewelry as well as vintage vinyl, magazines, posters, photos, and sports memorabilia is Gold Dust & Rouge.

The owners carefully scour the state of Maine and beyond for estate sales offering promising items—which they then display at their well-organized shop alongside many other one-of-a-kind beautiful objects, each perfect for a unique gift, adding to a collection, or to elegantly accessorize a special outfit.

Offering a warren of rooms full of artfully displayed goods, Melissa’s shop shares space with her daughter’s business endeavor, The Spotted Horse Tack Shop—so bully for you if you’re an equestrian as well as a bargain hunter.

Every corner and surface in the store is filled with carefully curated “finds,” like clothing, accessories, furniture, antiques, jewelry, art, and much more.
