A Kittery disc golf course
If, like me, you’re not a big fan of golf (neither watching nor playing the game), why not give disc golf a try?

While the game may not look like traditional golf (you use frisbee-like discs instead of golf balls, and sink said discs into elevated baskets rather than holes in the ground), many of the terms, methods, and rules are the same.

And while there are unfortunately no disc golf establishments in Kittery, I’ve trolled the surrounding towns (and beyond) for any and all courses within a 45-minute drive; since Kittery is Maine’s southernmost community, this means you could be crossing one—or two—state lines to play a few rounds of this unique and family-friendly sport.

Offering 18 holes that provide enough challenge for even seasoned players (while still being beginner-friendly), this course was built in 2002 and features Mach VII targets and mixed-surface (concrete, paver, brick, and dirt), dual-distance tees.

The layout is challenging, with just enough natural playing hazards to keep things interesting. There are also bathrooms available, and dogs are allowed.

To keep things lively, this course features year-round play for their well-maintained, 18-hole course, and there are four alternate layouts on offer, ranging from a par-54, 5,360-foot to a par-64, 6,268-foot option.

The targets are ChainStar brand, and the tees are paver or brick; players cite the front nine holes as mostly wooded, while the back nine—which feature a few sneaky water hazards—are more open, and the whole course is moderately flat.

Forest Glen Campground

Just a quick, 24-minute drive from Kittery, the 18-hole disc golf course at the Forest Glen Campground is only open to the public during regular campground office hours—which means you can’t get in until after 10 a.m. unless you’re camping there.

Featuring original DISCatcher Pro targets, dirt/gravel tee boxes, and tight fairways, this 4,447-foot, par-60 course is not high-end…but the low fees reflect this.

The course has notable elevation changes and is substantially forested; many reviewers mention narrow fairways and the technicality of the terrain—in a good way.
