If you are familiar with the Kittery area, then you know it is the southernmost town in the state of Maine—a geographical bonus if you are in the market for a new tattoo.
Not only do you have access to several trustworthy tattoo and piercing studios in southern Maine, but you’re also even closer to more fantastic inking options in nearby Portsmouth, NH, and other neighboring communities; the distance (in minutes) from Kittery’s outlet area is noted for each shop below.
Whether you’re a nervous tattoo newbie or a long-time body art collector, there is surely an artist on this list for you.

New Image Tattoo
This little “speakeasy” shop is tucked into the back of the Classic Barber Studios and is the only tattoo studio in Kittery.
Custom art is their specialty, but they’ll ink whatever you want; just bring along your ideas, photos, or web images and they’ll do the rest.
The artists are easygoing and friendly, the studio is clean, comfortable, and casual, and the prices are reasonable. Walk-ins are often available and will be posted on social media as appointments open up.
Location: 8 Dexter Ln, Kittery, ME 03904

Grim North Tattoo & Piercing
Grim North is only five minutes from Kittery and has three talented tattoo artists as well as a piercing technician.
Often booked months in advance, there are no walk-in appointments available here—and you typically will have to wait a while to get in the books.
Having several artists on-site means there’s bound to be someone who specializes in whatever style you’re looking to have inked; this is a custom studio, however, and the artists primarily tattoo their own artwork for clients.
Location: 167 High St, Portsmouth, NH 03801 (5 minutes)

Hobo’s Tattoo
“Tried and true since ’82,” this studio is less than 10 minutes from Kittery in Portsmouth, NH, and is one of the oldest in the Granite State.
Three artists are currently on Hobo’s Portsmouth roster (there is also a studio in Rochester) and specialize in many styles, including tribal, American traditional, geometric, realism, lettering, and Japanese imagery, as well as customer-provided inspiration and requests.
You can reach out to the artists individually to discuss your ideas—and if you’re lucky, there might even be a walk-in appointment available.

Iron Works Tattoo
Offering both appointments and walk-ins (the latter usually for smaller body art), Iron Works was established in 2009 and is also located under ten minutes away from Kittery.
With a focus on large-scale, custom work (typically appointment-only), the artists here also do all manner of other styles; you can check out their extensive online portfolios to determine which best suits your needs and then book directly with whomever you choose.

Inkremental Tattoo Studio
Also less than ten minutes from Kittery, this studio is a real breath of fresh air; the vibe is Zen and chic, and the artist, Pamela Babkirk, is of the mind that getting a tattoo is self-care and should be presented as such, “like getting a massage or facial.”
While Pamela specializes in black and gray, she also takes on color projects; you also must have an appointment—no walk-ins accepted.
Location: 26 Brickyard Ct Unit 4, York, ME 03909 (8 minutes)

The studio is less than 15 minutes from Kittery, the artists are approachable and kind, and walk-ins are accommodated if possible.

Skull & Snake Tattoo Studio Art Gallery
This “tattoo studio, dark art gallery, and oddities museum” is exactly that—and while you can walk in to check out the art and oddities, you’ll need an appointment for a tattoo.
To do that, you’ll need to fill out an appointment request; if the artist you’ve chosen feels your design might be better suited to someone else, they will steer you in the right direction.
Skull & Snake is less than a half hour from Kittery, and return clients travel much farther than that to get their body art inked here.
