Town of Lincoln, Maine

lincoln sign Established in 1829, the town of Lincoln has long been a hub for neighboring communities. While not a large town – the 2020 census recorded 4,853 residents – it is the biggest one for at least 30 miles in any direction. That means people from surrounding towns frequently come to Lincoln to dine, shop, and find entertainment.

Lincoln Lakes Region

The town slogan is “Come for the lakes, stay for the lifestyle.” Since there are 13 lakes and ponds in or bordering the town, there are plenty of opportunities for folks to enjoy watersports and activities. Mattanawcook Pond is one you will see if you visit, as it is right behind Main Street. There is a picturesque gazebo facing the water, and a public beach at Prince Thomas Park is only one block away.

The Penobscot River also runs through Lincoln, offering even more opportunities for enjoying the water. Fishermen have multiple options for testing their skills against a variety of species, which makes the town a frequent destination for anglers in both the summer and winter months.

With so many bodies of water available, swimmers and boaters also find plenty to do in Lincoln. In fact, many do embrace the second half of the town slogan by finding waterfront property in the town. There are plenty of rentals available for those wanting to try a vacation in the area, and people who want a permanent camp or waterfront home will find the real estate business in Lincoln booming.

Rainbow over the Walmart in Lincoln Maine

A variety of stores and shops have sprung up to meet the needs of area residents and visitors. Walmart is the only “big box” store in town, while the Marden’s on Maine Street is a favorite of bargain hunters from all over. And just across the street is Possibilities, a popular local gift store.

There are two grocery stores in Lincoln – Hannaford, and the smaller Steaks N Stuff. Both Walmart and Hannaford offer pharmacies for prescriptions, as does the Walgreens located at the corner of Main Street and West Broadway.

If three pharmacies seems like a lot for a smaller town, remember that Lincoln is a hub for many surrounding communities – not just for shopping, but also for healthcare. Penobscot Valley Hospital makes its home in town, as does the Health Access Network walk-in care facility.

Lincoln also boasts several optometrists and dentists, as well as a physical and occupational therapy center. So whether you need emergency or preventative health care, Lincoln has you covered.

Campgrounds in Lincoln

While there are a number of cabins and camps to rent in Lincoln, the closest campground is Sleeping Bear near Silver Lake in Lee – about 13 miles away. There are also several campgrounds in Medway – like the Katahdin Shadows campground, named for Maine’s tallest mountain a couple towns beyond in Millinocket.
