Blind Tiger

Situated in two separate guest houses in the West End, the Blind Tiger is one of the newer bed and breakfasts in Portland. While it appears on many a “top ten hotels” list, the folks at both locations are very quick to point out that they are definitely not hotels.

Created to “make you feel like a real Portlander,” these nineteenth-century architectural gems both offer local hosts that can provide you with all the dining recommendations and touring information you need—and much of it is located within walking distance of both spots.

The Carleton Street location offers six luxe, well-appointed rooms (note that there are no in-room TVs here), and the Blind Tiger on Danforth Street has nine.

Amenities for both include a complimentary toast and yogurt bar every morning, open pantry access, free high-speed WiFi, luxurious robes and bath amenities, and daily housekeeping; pets (excluding service animals) are not allowed.

All rooms also offer electric fireplaces, Ethan Allen beds, and private bathrooms (two are en suite); other amenities include a full, hot, gourmet breakfast (which can be made to go if you’re on the run), snacks and drinks available 24/7, a lush garden with a fire pit and fountain, free high-speed WiFi, and concierge services, and pets are not permitted.

The Fleetwood House

Offering three guestrooms—one with a private bath, two with shared baths—the Fleetwood House was built in 1800 and has been in the same family for four generations.

Each of the rooms is quaint and comfortable and has free WiFi, robes, and air conditioning. A homemade hot breakfast is included with your stay, and well-behaved pets are permitted; note there is an additional charge per pet, and the owners have cats…so if your pooch isn’t partial to felines, perhaps choose a different spot, or leave Fido with a friend.

Tucked into a line of stately row houses in Portland’s West End Historic District, the Percy Inn was built in 1830 and is located at Longfellow Square.

Inn owner and travel writer Dale Northrup is an invaluable resource for advice on touring the city, and his much-accoladed inn is the perfect hub of comfort and classiness to call home base. There are eight different rooms and suites to choose from, all of which offer guests queen beds, free WiFi, flat-screen TVs, wet bars, refrigerators stocked with complimentary soft drinks, and private baths.

Parking and an expanded continental breakfast come with your room rate; note that children under 10 and pets are not allowed at the Percy Inn.

Best Bower

So, this isn’t technically a bed and breakfast, because the second part of that equation isn’t included with your rate…but hear me out. The chic, bespoke guestrooms feature custom-crafted and installed woodwork, tile, stonework, and metalwork, and all offer amenities like mini- fridges, WiFi, upscale linens, flat-screen TVs, heated bathroom floors and towel racks, in-room coffee, and more; there is also a shared kitchenette with all the equipment you might need to fix a quick meal.

Now, here’s the rest of the story: If you so choose, and with a 48-hour notice, you can order a “provision package”; the kind folks at the Best Bower will shop and then stock your fridge with a locally sourced “Farm to Suite” breakfast spread, or even a charcuterie and cheese board, complete with fruit, nuts, and jam.
