man scoring at a portland disc golf course If you’re like me and never quite got the hang of the whole “hit the tiny, dimpled ball with the long metal stick and try to sink said tiny ball into a tiny hole millions of miles away” scene, then perhaps you should consider disc golf.

The mechanics, rules, and general format of play are similar to traditional golf, but instead of clubs and balls, players use a frisbee-like disc and aim for raised metal baskets.

While Portland, Maine, does not have any disc golf courses within city limits, there are more than enough courses to choose from less than an hour away (drive times from downtown are noted below).

Bonus: Unlike regular golf, there are many free public courses around, which are also noted separately.

Map of Portland Area Disc Golf Courses

Looking for a disc golf course near you? Hoping to play the game for the first time, or just play somewhere new? This map of the Portland disc golf courses in this article will make finding your next game a breeze:

Pleasant Hill Disc Golf

Converted from a traditional golf course to disc golf in 2007, this family-owned establishment features 18 holes on 43 acres of rolling greens, tree-lined fairways, and ponds.

Pleasant Hill does not rent discs—but fear not. There is a full-service pro shop on-site, and if you buy three discs, you play for free. Open daily from 9 a.m. until sunset, weather permitting, Pleasant Hill is affordable, dog-friendly (except in the clubhouse), and fun for all ages.

Twin Brook

Twin Brook opened in 2013 and offers a mostly flat and partially-wooded 2,817-foot course. Located in a public park/athletic facility, the 9-hole, 36-par Twin Brook course features an honor-system payment box, which is located near the first tee. All of the tees are grass—no concrete platforms—and restrooms are available.

Sunset Ridge

The budget-friendly, 9-hole disc golf course at Sunset Ridge offers a novice-friendly experience while still providing some challenges for more seasoned players.

While the course is relatively short, you are not limited to one round for the low fee; play as long as you like at Sunset Ridge. There is a clubhouse that offers a bar and pub-style dining, bathrooms are available, and you must call ahead to book a tee time.

Grant’s Nonesuch Valley Farm Disc Golf

Featuring “18 holes of fields, forest, and fun,” Grant’s opened in the midst of the pandemic—when we were all looking for safe, outdoor activities—and never looked back.

Players cite open, rolling greens, solid, flat tee pads, friendly staff, and just the right mix of technical approaches at this welcoming facility. Grant’s is located less than 25 minutes from downtown Portland and hosts many tours, tournaments, and events, all of which are updated frequently on their Facebook page.

Boom Field Disc Golf

Built in 2005, Boom Field offers players 18 holes for an affordable rate, payable into an honor-system box. Featuring a pleasant mix of wide, slightly-elevated fairways and an easy-to-follow layout, this course is just under a half-hour from downtown Portland.

Described by some players as an open course and a welcome break from overly technical shots, Boom Field has also been said to offer a healthy range of par challenges.

Bittersweet Ridge Disc Golf

Bittersweet Ridge features not one but two disc golf courses, each providing 18 holes of play less than 30 minutes from Portland. Both offer highly-wooded, well-tended fairways and a plethora of elevation changes; the baskets are carefully placed so as to be challenging, and the tee pads are solid concrete.

Customers rave about the talented, friendly staff and the well-stocked pro shop; most agree that this course is suitable for players of all skill levels and is family-friendly.

Pineland Farms Disc Golf

Located at the Pineland Farms Recreation Center, each of these two 18-hole disc golf courses has its own name: The Patriot and The Minuteman (the latter of which remains open year-round from sunrise to sunset).

The professional Patriot course offers 7,155 feet of “pinched fairways and turtleback greens” and is delightfully challenging; the 4,116-foot Minuteman is more suitable for casual, recreational play, and its tee pads are kept clear in the snowy months.

Pricing is affordable, and annual passes are available; you can also rent discs at Pineland.

Fire Fly Disc Golf

Adjacent to the Funky Bow brewery (which seems like a match made in heaven, to me), Fire Fly Disc Golf is just over thirty minutes from Portland’s hectic hubbub.

Described by many players as moderately technical and challenging with plenty of elevation changes, Fire Fly accepts payment (which is quite affordable) via an honor-system cash box or Venmo.

Tee pads are level concrete, the courses are well-groomed, and the signage is clear and easy to understand.

Hammond Farm Disc Golf

This woodsy, 18-hole course is located on an old family farm property and features a solid balance of both open and technical shots.

While located 45 minutes from Portland, Hammond Farm is worth the drive; open every day from sunrise to sunset, this course offers brick-and-granite tee pads, neat signage, a clear line of sight for every basket, and frequent tournaments, events, tours, and classes.

Free Disc Golf Courses Near Portland, Maine

Black Point Community Park

If you have your own discs and are looking for somewhere to play a quick (really quick) round of disc golf, Black Point Community Park is just a short ride from downtown Portland. While it only features three baskets, you can play through as many times as you like, as long as others aren’t queuing up behind you.

Location: 160 Black Point Rd, Scarborough, ME 04074 (12 minutes)

Pratt’s Brook Disc Golf

Only 20 minutes from Portland, this 9-hole, 34-par course is located in a public park, so be wary of unaware picnickers—and other players, as the 2,143-foot course also backtracks and crisscrosses itself. The tee boxes are packed gravel—which is to be expected of a free facility—and the course is predominantly flat and open.

Riverside Drive Disc Golf Course

Featuring 9 holes of disc golf less than a half-hour from Portland, this course is located in Biddeford’s Rotary Park. A great spot for beginners, the fairways are wide-open, and none are over 400 feet; like Pratt’s Brook, this is a public park, so watch out for foot traffic.
