Although it seems that the explosion of fabulous dining options has been soaking up all the limelight in Portland lately, there are other rapidly expanding realms that don’t involve comestibles or libations…like the hair salon scene, for instance.
Covering the gamut of exclusive, high-end spa-like experiences down to places where you can just get a simple wash-and-cut, Portland caters to all price points and preferences…and chances are you’ll have several options, no matter which neighborhood you choose to have your locks lavished with love in.
A note of caution for those of you that struggle with timeliness: Most salons listed here will charge you in full for a missed appointment (and in many cases, if you are more than 15 minutes late, not only do you lose your appointment, you are charged in full as well).
Map of Portland Hair Salons
Looking for a hair salon near you? Want to get a coffee before your trim? This map of the Portland hair salons in this article will make finding your new favorite salon a breeze:
Head Games Hair
Self-described as “upscale and down-to-earth,” Head Games is a full-service salon and spa, offering a plethora of other services, including massage, manicures, skincare, and lashes/brows.
Their basic color treatments start at $90, while a women’s cut-and-style starts at a very reasonable $45.
First-time clients are asked to fill out a questionnaire and then pay a non-refundable deposit of $25, which will be applied to the cost of your first appointment.
Location: 116 Free St, Portland, ME 04101

Andiamo! Salon and Spa
Andiamo is a fabulous salon that features a long list of services for the discerning client: Specialty cuts, color, balayage, hair removal, extensions, Brazilian blowouts, sunless tanning, and permanent makeup are only part of their high-end offerings.
Women’s precision haircut-and-style prices start at $85, and color services range from $45 to $225.
Appointments are required—much like most Portland salons, walk-ins are not accommodated.
Location: 58 Exchange St, Portland, ME 04101

Bang Cut & Color
For over 20 years, Bang has been sending perfectly-coiffed, happy customers forth from their quirky, hipster-style salon in Portland’s Arts District.
Their focus is on your hair—no spa services here—and they’re really good at what they do. Interestingly, pricing differs depending on which of their stylists you book—but you can count on paying between $50-$65 for a women’s cut and style, and between $115-$125 for a full color.
Location: 659 Congress St, Portland, ME 04101

The Raven Salon
Raven is touted as a “Kevin.Murphy concept salon,” (yes, that period is intentional) which means they only use this particular brand product (environmentally friendly, high performance) in the salon. While their pricing is certainly reasonable (women’s cut and style starts at $30 and a full color starts at $75), Raven has a high-end feel.
Appointments are referred to as “reservations,” and their stylists’ names are accompanied by labels like “Master Stylist,” “Level 4 Cutting Specialist,” and “New Talent;” there is also a skincare and makeup consultant on-site, but no spa services.
Location: 490 Congress St, Portland, ME 04101

Heart & Mane
This adorable little salon is tucked away on a second story, kind of like a wee bird’s nest in the midst of the city.
You feel like family or an old friend when you come here—although don’t expect to be able to just waltz in off the street; Heart & Mane has a new client request form for you to fill out online before you are given an appointment.
Pricing is perhaps a bit higher than most other salons in Portland (women’s cut-and-style starts at $65; full color starts at $85), but for the personal attention—what they call “being cared for and seen”—it is well worth the few extra bucks.
Location: 28 Maple St Suite 204, Portland, ME 04101

Ethan Hunter Salon
Ethan Hunter is a combination barbershop/salon—one with an edgy, industrial-chic vibe.
This husband-and-wife team opened their salon in 1997, named it in memory of their son, and never looked back.
The barbering prices have a wide range—between $10 (beard trim) up to specialty scissor trims for $95.
A women’s cut-and-style ranges between $75 and $95, and prices for a full color are between $100-$135, depending on hair length.
Location: 395 Fore St, Portland, ME 04101

Jonathan Douglas Salon & Relaxation Studio
A full-service spa and salon, Jonathan Douglas is all about—yup, you guessed it—relaxing.
And while not located downtown, it’s worth the extra drive to South Portland if you’re looking for a head-to-toe, all-about-me experience.
Services include hairstyling, makeup, color, Brazilian blowout, massage, body therapies, and spa packages; women’s cuts start at $45, and a full color starts at $85.
Location: 118 Maine Mall Rd, South Portland, ME 04106

House of J. Henry
One of the “leading L’Oreal Prestige Partner salons in the Northeast,” the House of J. Henry refers to their stylists as “artists,” and each of them must complete a 40-week in-house training program before they can begin as a “Level 1 Specialist.”
The specialists can work their way up to a Level 6, depending on how popular they are with clients (determined by the “demand of their time;” prices of services go up along with the levels—for example, a haircut with a Level 1 Specialist starts at $51, whereas the same haircut starts at $81 with a Level 6).
The salon, which has been in business since 2011, is expansive, as is their stylist roster, so chances are you’ll be able to book a service within your price range.
Location: 24 Free St, Portland, ME 04101

Akari Salon and Spa
For over 35 years, Akari has been morphing from a simple cut-and-color venue to a full-service spa salon, priding themselves on the ability to customize your experience to your needs.
The space is bright, beautiful, and energetic; services include the hair studio, nail care, massage, skincare, and bridal packages. For a women’s cut-and-style, prices start at $62; a single-process color begins at $88.
Akari also has a loyalty rewards program; earn a point for each dollar spent and then choose from a list of services to spend your booty on.

Ollo Boutique Salon
Ollo is all about the hair (the only other service they offer is wax hair removal—there’s a joke in there somewhere, I’m sure).
The six stylists are down-to-earth and welcoming, and while they specialize in on-location wedding packages, their in-salon services are just as stellar.
Prices are reasonable—women’s cut-and-style starts at $50, and a full color starts at $100—and when you walk into this colorful, spacious salon, you’ll feel like you stepped into someone’s tastefully-designed living room.
Location: 569 Congress St, Portland, ME 04101

Knaughty Hair Salon
Call it shabby-chic, quirky, or urban-industrial—no matter how you label it, Knaughty’s aesthetic is just as fun as its name.
You can read up on each of their talented stylists in their online bios, and services include waxing, skincare, cosmetics, and bridal packages (in addition to their full-service hair salon offerings, of course).
Prices are surprisingly affordable for Portland—a women’s cut-and-style starts at just $25, and a full color starts at $45.
Location: 305 Commercial St # 6, Portland, ME 04101
Website: Knaughty Hair Salon
And now, it is time for me to sign off…but because I’m your buddy, I’ll give you one last heads-up (ha).
For boutique-style, on-site wedding packages, the luxurious, appointment-only Aphrodite Salon has earned nationwide rave reviews for their thoughtful, thorough, and personalized performance on that biggest-of-days event.
