The harbor in Rockport, Maine

Smack between Camden and Rockland on Route 1, Rockport is yet another perfect seaside getaway to add to your Maine coast road trip; this little town on the ocean is the perfect foil to the more tourist-heavy areas like Kennebunkport, Boothbay, or Bar Harbor.

Exploring Rockport Maine

While Rockport has become known as an artists’ community in recent years, it started as one of the country’s major suppliers of limestone—as evidenced by the restored kilns displayed at the Rockport Marine Park. Also home to the beloved monument to Andre the Seal, a local legend to children and adults alike, the Marine Park offers spectacular views of the harbor, as well as picnic tables, bathrooms, and rafts. Within walking distance from the Marine Park are two other great spots: Kokonen and Walker Parks. Head south along Pascal Avenue, and you’ll first encounter Kokonen Park—a waterfront gem that features a huge chess set on the lawn. Stroll a few more blocks south and you’ll find Walker Park, with its gorgeous water views, beach, playground, grills, and picnic areas. Who brought the hot dogs?

For those of you that appreciate a breathtaking view but cringe when you hear the word “hike,” give the Beech Hill Preserve trails a try. The Summit Road Trail is labeled as “easy,” and the ¾-mile road to the bald summit is worth the view from the sod-roofed stone hut at the peak. Leashed dogs are welcome, but make sure they (and you) stay on the marked trails at all times to protect the flora and fauna.

The Samoset Resort on the Ocean

When you’ve had enough of your walking stick, it’s might be time for a stick of a different nature: Grab your golf clubs. The Samoset Resort on the Ocean boasts an 18-hole (each one with an ocean view) championship course, dubbed “Best Golf Course” by Down East Magazine in 2020. But if that sounds a bit too intimidating for your golf skillset, try Golfer’s Crossing Mini Golf on Route 1 instead. 18 holes set in a wonderland of waterfalls, trees, and plantings…and there’s ice cream for afterward, too! Oakland Park Bowling Lanes is a great option for when the weather isn’t complying with your grand outdoor plans—candlepin bowling fun for all ages, and family-owned for over 55 years. And what says “summertime” better than a night at the drive-in? Pack up the car and head to the Shotwell Drive-in for a selection of old favorites, documentaries, and new releases—all projected from the venue’s mini-lighthouse! For just $20 per vehicle, it’s a bargain oozing with New England charm.

Speaking of New England charm—for a view from the water that will knock your socks off, you can climb aboard the Schooner Yacht Heron with a group of your nearest and dearest…or try the Happy Hour Sunset cruise with just you and your favorite person. These memorable cruise experiences depart from historic Rockport Harbor every day in season, including several additional special trips, such as for the Fourth of July fireworks display or the Windjammer parade.

As we mentioned earlier, Rockport is where creatives come to…well, create. So, it only stands to reason that here you’ll find all manner of studios, galleries, and artisan storefronts to browse to your heart’s content. Peter Ralston’s photography gallery will take your breath away with his ability to perfectly capture the essence of this working harbor, so be sure to set aside some time to stop in. The Michael Good Gallery offers shoppers access to art of a completely different ilk; handmade jewelry and sculptures that utilize a much-sought-for, specialized technique—and the studio also features a variety of other artisan-made goods.

Lodging in Rockport

When it comes to finding a place to lay your travel-weary head or fill that hollow place in your stomach, Rockport will not disappoint. Whether you are a golfer or not, the Samoset Resort also has a wealth of resort-style accommodation options with spectacular views, including cottages, timeshare condominiums, and terrace or balcony rooms. In addition to the golf course—and several fantastic dining options—the Samoset also features a luxurious spa, an “Ultimate Backyard” playground, pools, and a high-end fitness center—truly something for everyone, and all with ocean views to die for. The seasonal Glen Cove Inn and Suites is a much smaller, motel-style, budget-friendly option. Their updated rooms are airy and comfortable, and their “better-than-continental” breakfast is included with your stay. The Strawberry Hill Seaside Inn is another affordable hotel right on Route 1—with its heated outdoor pool, waterfront location, and quick access to all Rockport, Rockland, and Camden have to offer, this is a fantastic find.

Dining

As for satisfying your appetite, you’ll find exactly the vibe and menu you’re looking for—no matter what type of cuisine you’re craving. For a creative, thoughtful menu of curated small plates and dinners, make a reservation at 18 Central Oyster Bar and Grill. If you’re a plan-ahead type of traveler, Nina June has the option to reserve (one month advance reservations required) a prix fixe Italian dinner…but don’t worry—they also feature an a la carte menu for walk-ins. Offshore provides a far more casual (but no less enjoyable) family-style dining experience, as does the quintessential Rockport Diner (one of their breakfast bowls will hold you over until dinner). And for midday grazing, you’ll have so many options, it’ll be hard not to ruin your appetite for dinner. Whether you’re looking for sweet or savory snacking—or both—your taste buds will be delighted, no matter which storefront you choose. The blueberry donuts at The Willow Bake Shoppe landed in the top five of Down East Magazine’s list of top five in the state (and that’s saying something, here in blueberry land), and the Fresh Off the Farm market offers all manner of fresh produce, cheeses, soups, baked products, and handmade crafts. Talk about one-stop shopping!

In true coastal Maine style, Rockport keeps true to her working waterfront mariner history without sacrificing travel destination appeal. This seaside haven is sure to captivate one and all; in an attempt to simply pass on through, you’ll undoubtedly find yourself staying longer than you expected—and coming back again for more.
