Augusta is Maine’s capital city and a bustling center of commerce, business, education, and—thanks largely in part to the hard work of the Augusta Downtown Alliance—a slowly-flourishing, family-friendly, destination-worthy downtown.
And while change tends to operate on its own schedule, especially if said changes are to be of the lasting variety, Augusta is steadily making her way forward.
If you’re in the city for an extended vacation or just passing through, you’ll have a variety of things to help occupy your time and fill your empty belly here—especially if you have a sweet tooth, because there are some amazing bakeries in Maine’s capital city as well as in the surrounding communities.

The Perfect Circle Cheesecakery
Owned and operated by three sisters with an obsession with all things cheesecake-y, The Perfect Circle is like a dream come true for folks like me that love this particular dessert.
Offered in three sizes—7”, 9”, and cupcake-sized minis—these rich confections are true works of art. And if you can’t make up your mind about which of the 48 flavors to pick (choose from options like gingerbread, mixed berry swirl, eggnog, chocolate peanut butter, and carrot cake), don’t worry—because you can get a mixed box of the minis.

Bagel Mainea
Featuring award-winning, baked-daily bagels, breads, and wraps as well as homemade whoopie pies, cinnamon twists, muffins, and cookies, you can satiate both your sweet and savory cravings at Bagel Mainea.
Bagels are the specialty here (duh!) and they come in 17 flavors (my favorite is the black olive and rosemary); the house breads (white, marble, rye, sourdough, and wheat) and wraps (flour, spinach, garlic-herb, wheat, and gluten-free) are also fantastic, and you can have made-to-order sandwiches in your choice of any of the above.

West Street Bakery
Located just over 15 minutes from downtown Augusta, the West Street Bakery is self-dubbed a “micro-bakery” and is another pre-order-only establishment; with a little planning, though, you can get your hands on some of their amazing baked goods at several different farmer’s markets and at Hussey’s General Store in Windsor.
There are set pre-order and pickup schedules for all of West Street’s custom cakes, breads, cookies, and pastries; custom cake order availability is limited, so be sure to get yours in early!

Chase Farm Bakery
What started out as a simple passion for baking became a profession for Robin Chase, owner of Chase Farm Bakery.
Her baked-from-scratch goods are sold in a retail shop attached to her home’s barn, as well as at many other local shops and farmer’s markets. And while she may be known around the town of Whitefield as “the pie lady,” her talents extend far beyond just pies.
Think muffins, cookies, donuts, scones, biscuits, whoopie pies, cannoli, cornbread, English muffins, and cinnamon buns—and that’s just scratching the surface of the bakery magic performed here.
