An Augusta, ME disc golf course
It seems to me that I am one of the few people on this planet that doesn’t enjoy playing golf. Okay—full disclosure: Beyond a few rounds of mini-golf, I’ve never even played real golf. It just doesn’t appeal to me.

But disc golf, on the other hand, seems like great fun, and after researching for this writeup, I’m thinking I just may give it a go.

As defined by the Professional Disc Golf Association (yes, that’s a thing), the game is “played much like golf except, instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc” and aim for an “elevated metal basket.”

Augusta is home to a couple of disc golf courses—and there are many others within a 30-minute drive. Frisbee on the fairway, anyone?

Augusta Disc Golf

Quarry Run is the 18-hole, par-71 course at Augusta Disc Golf, offering 6,223 feet of play; it is meticulously kept and has hosted the Maine Players’ Tour in years past. The owners have recently added a second 18-hole course, Ghost Tree, bringing even more fun to the table…er, green. There is a well-stocked pro shop on site, a nine-hole putting area, and a driving net (as you can see, many of the same terms are used in disc golf as in the standard game), and both courses are very affordable and family-friendly, offering a variety of wooded and open tees for all skill levels.

Porcupine Ridge Disc Golf

Highly rated Porcupine Ridge is your other disc golf option if you’d prefer to stay within August city limits. The last hole is Porcupine Ridge’s “Signature Hole,” in which your disc must cross a brook and clear a substantial rise in elevation in order for you to sink the shot. Reviewers cite pristine upkeep, friendly staff, varied tees for all skill levels, and a top-notch pro shop.

Burnsboro Disc Golf

Just 15 minutes from downtown Augusta, Burnsboro has been in business since 2001 and is one of the state’s oldest public disc golf courses. The friendly folks at this 18-hole, dog-friendly establishment work hard to keep it open all year long, using snowmobiles to pack and groom the course and good ol’ manpower to clear off tees and benches after every snow event (and in Maine, that’s often). If that isn’t dedication to the sport, I don’t know what is! Players describe the course as short but challenging—but varying tees make Burnsboro family-friendly, as well.

You’ll find benches and trash receptacles at every hole, and there are even porta-potties on the course, so you don’t have to worry about hot-footing it all the way back to the beginning and holding up the game.

The first nine holes are in open fielded areas, and the remaining 9 (or 12) are in woodsy terrain.
