While Augusta, Maine may not be rife with classic, counter-style delis, the city certainly has its share of long-standing establishments where you can get a fabulous deli-style sandwich—complete with waxed paper wrapping, chips, and a pickle.
And no matter what you call them where you’re from—hoagies, grinders, subs—they can typically be found at pizza shops and general stores, which is often the case in Augusta.
So, if you’re in Maine’s capital city and you find you’re craving an honest-to-goodness Italian sub—complete with oil, vinegar, and hots—you’ll have plenty of delicious options, all within city limits.

Twins Country Store
Since 2010, the family-run Twins Country Store has been making “twice as nice,” inexpensive fare with fresh, high-quality ingredients and friendly smiles.
Offering a menu burgeoning with hot and cold subs as well as wraps and club sandwiches, you’ll be hard-put to decide what to order.
If you’re feeling like a cold sub might fill the void nicely, try Emily’s Italian: Provolone, ham, salami, pepperoni, lettuce, onion, tomato, green pepper, black olives, pickles, and jalapeños. There are also plenty of other delicious options available like pizza, burgers, salads, chicken tenders, and a great breakfast menu.

Damon’s Pizza & Italians
Damon’s is hugely popular with locals and visitors alike and has been in business since 1950. No surprise there, as the fare is delicious, affordable, and abundant.
And like the name says, one of the specialties here is the Italian—but there is a slew of other between-the-bread options, as well, like Dagwoods, hot and cold sandwiches (including open-face variations), and wraps.
If you’re feeling particularly hangry, give the 14” Big Dave specialty sub a shot: Ham, salami, genoa salami, bacon, American and provolone cheeses, onions, tomatoes, pickles, and mayonnaise—served hot or cold. I recommend hot—because when does melted cheese not make anything better?

Sam’s Italian Foods
With 12 other Maine locations, Sam’s is an in-state sensation, offering “courtesy, quality, and service” since 1939. Using only the best ingredients for all of their mouth-watering sandwiches and other fare, Sam’s also offers sandwich platters, pizza, breakfast, salads, and calzones. But back to the sandwiches.
You’ll have your work cut out for you when it comes to picking just one sandwich at Sam’s; you’ll have to choose from 12 Italians, 5 cold sandwiches, 12 hot sandwiches, or 7 wraps.
But let me help you out; for a real belly-buster, try the Steak and Cheese with red peppers, green peppers, onions, and mushrooms.

End Zone
Offering delivery, dine-in, and take-out service for their sandwiches and pizza, the End Zone is a lively, family-friendly establishment.
The menu is extensive, offering Italians, Dagwoods, wraps, hot and cold sandwiches, and 17 specialty subs.
You’ll also find pizza, burgers, calzones, salads, and appetizers at End Zone, in case you’re not feeling sandwich-ish.
But since I know precisely zero people that don’t like sandwiches, I’ll do you all a solid and recommend the Kicker specialty sub: Pepperoni, hot sausage, cheese, jalapeños, pickles, green peppers, and onions (now you see why it’s called the Kicker…it’s kicky!).

Whipper’s Pizza
People must love their deli-style sandwiches and pizza in Augusta because the establishments that serve those particular types of fare have some serious longevity.
Since 1960, this family business has been offering dine-in, take-out, and delivery service for their delicious and affordable food. Hot and cold sandwiches, “Big Whip” Italians, Dagwoods, and much more are on the menu at Whipper’s, as well as pizza, calzone, and breakfast.
My favorite is the Oven Toasted Reuben—not only because I love me a good Reuben, but this particular version is big enough that you’ll probably be full after eating only half…and then you get to have it again for dinner.

Antigone’s Pizza
With two other locations in Maine (Lewiston and Brunswick), the Augusta Antigone’s is the original location, having opened its doors in 2003.
Featuring a hearty list of sandwich-centric offerings like one-size-only hot subs, gyros, and six different Italian variations, you can tailor your experience by adding as many or few toppings (think lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, hots, condiments, onions, and peppers) as your hungry heart desires.
Antigone’s also offers dine-in, take-out, and Doordash service—which means if you’re feeling particularly lazy, you don’t even have to leave the house to get your deli sandwich fix.

College Carry-Out
This much-accoladed, award-winning shop is all about “experience, tradition, family values, quality products, and customer satisfaction.” College Carry-Out is a community-friendly take-out hotspot and convenience store, and has been in business since 1981; it’s easy to see why they’ve been around for so long when you see the menu.
There’s something for everyone, here: Italians, Dagwoods, hot and cold sandwiches and clubs, and wraps are on offer at College Carry-Out, all made to order with the freshest ingredients and at reasonable prices.
For a real taste sensation, try the Oven Grinder: Ham, salami, pepperoni, onions, green peppers, pizza cheese, and pizza sauce (grab a few extra napkins for this one—and remember, the messier, the yummier).

Amato’s Sandwich Shop
No—Amato’s isn’t a Maine-specific restaurant. But this Italian favorite did get its humble beginnings in Portland, Maine before expanding into Augusta and many other spots in the state…and beyond.
“Sandwich masters from day one,” Giovanni Amato sold his first signature Italian on a Portland fishing dock in 1900—and never looked back. Beyond the original Italians, Amato’s sandwich offerings now include wraps, focaccia sandwiches, panini, and hot subs—all made to order with top-quality ingredients.
Because it’s the house specialty, I suggest going with the Classic Italian Cold Cut: Genoa Salami, capicola, prosciutto, provolone, onions, pickles, tomatoes, green peppers, olives, salt, pepper, and oil.

Downtown Diner
What’s a diner without sandwiches? Not a diner at all, in my book. And the Downtown Diner doesn’t disappoint—you’ll find a host of affordable and delicious hot and cold sandwiches and wraps on offer here, as well as four different club sandwiches, all served with chips (or French fries, for a bit extra) and a pickle.
Give the Grilled Pastrami and Cheese sandwich a try—your taste buds and tummy will thank you.
