Of all the things that come to mind when someone mentions Maine, chances are lobster will be one of them—lobster rolls, particularly.
Whether you are a life-long lobster lover or are looking forward to partaking of this particular crustacean sandwich delight for the first time, you won’t be disappointed if you’re visiting the Bath area. Many restaurants and roadside shacks here offer lobster rolls, so it’s impossible to write about them all—but I’ve gathered the most notable spots here for your perusal.
I’ve also included distances to downtown Bath if the eatery is in a neighboring town because that’s how I lobster roll.

Schutty’s Seafood
Simplicity is the key to Schutty’s lobster roll success. Served with homemade potato chips and a pickle, the roll at this seasonal food truck is made with fresh, hand-picked lobster meat dressed lightly in mayo—or sautéed in butter—on a grilled roll. Usually open from mid-April through late October, loyal customers wait all winter long for Schutty’s to start serving up their famous lobster rolls again once the snow melts…and sometimes before. This is Maine, after all.

J.R. Maxwell & Company

Dressed with mayonnaise and served on a split-top roll with lettuce, you also get to choose a side to go with your lobster roll at J.R. Maxwell’s: French fries, baked beans, house-made potato chips, mashed potatoes, or coleslaw.

Kennebec Tavern
The folks at the Kennebec Tavern invite you to “kick back on the Kennebec” and enjoy one of their specialty lobster rolls while sitting on the deck overlooking the river.
Their version of the Maine classic sando is hand-picked lobster meat tossed in mayonnaise with lettuce on a torpedo roll and a pickle on the side.
The roll comes with either French fries or potato salad; you can also opt for sweet potato fries, onion rings, or fruit salad for a small upcharge.

Taste of Maine Restaurant
If you’re looking for a great lobster roll, wouldn’t it stand to reason you should go to the place with a giant lobster on the roof?
That would be Taste of Maine, located just north of downtown Bath and a favorite spot for seafood to locals and tourists alike since 1978.
And if you love lobster rolls, then you’ve come to the right place, because they’ve got “the world’s largest lobster roll” on offer. Over three times the size of a typical lobster roll, this is definitely a meal to share.
Served with French fries, slices of watermelon, and a pickle, the fresh-picked lobster meat is served with mayo and lettuce on a toasted roll (there is also a normal-sized lobster roll on offer, for those of you that have a smaller appetite).

Pepper’s Landing
You’ll have lobster roll options at Pepper’s Landing, as well—lots of options. All five versions of this Maine classic are made using fresh-picked knuckle, claw, and tail meat, served on a grilled, split-top roll…but there the similarities end.
Cold, warm, basic, or fancy—whatever your preference, they’ve got it at Pepper’s. I love the Kennebunkport Roll: Lobster meat mixed with cilantro-lime aioli, topped with red pepper-pickled cabbage, pico de gallo, and Cajun seasoning. Zesty!

The lobster rolls here are made with hand-picked, fresh knuckle, claw, and tail meat dressed with mayo or drawn butter and piled into a grilled, split-top roll with lettuce.
You can opt for the standard roll—or if you’re really hungry, get the ½-pounder—which you’ll probably need the assistance of a fork to consume.

Sprague’s Lobster
This seasonal lobster shack is often favorably compared to its famed, much-accoladed competitor (which will remain unnamed) across the street: Sprague’s lobster roll is just as delicious, served up simply in a grilled roll with drawn butter on the side, faster, and for less money.
Reviewer after reviewer commented about how their entire Sprague’s experience took less time than it took for people across the street at you-know-who’s to reach the front of the line just to place an order. Seems like a no-brainer to me…
