An Augusta, ME thrift store
While the state capital may not be rife with upscale shops and boutiques—yet—Augusta still has more than enough branded department stores.

But if you’re looking to score some amazing bargains while updating your wardrobe, changing up your home décor, or hunting down a truly unique gift, why not try a consignment or thrift store?

Augusta and the surrounding towns offer the frugal and discerning shopper plenty of establishments to choose from, selling everything from gently used clothing and accessories to trading cards and furniture.

Uncle Gary’s Stuff

Uncle Gary is a retiree who wasn’t quite ready for the proverbial rocking chair—and to your wallet’s benefit. He trolls yard sales, auctions, estate sales, and flea markets to stock his own warehouse thrift store with all the best “stuff,” and then sells it for “outrageously low prices.”

He also tracks down inventory overstock, so you can also score brand-new items on the cheap. Uncle Gary’s recently joined forces with The Vintage Violette—another popular Augusta thrift shop—so you can now troll two fantastic, money-saving collections in one location.

Goodwill Store

This well-known nonprofit uses the revenue from sales to help fund programs that provide job training and placement for folks that desperately need it—and the store itself provides jobs for the unemployed. Used clothing, furniture, kitchen items, home décor, books…you never know what you’ll find in a Goodwill Store; my rule of thumb is to never go in there with a specific item in mind.

Just give yourself plenty of shopping time, and sure enough, you’ll walk out of there with the exact item you didn’t know you needed.

Jellison Traders

Visiting Jellison Traders is kind of like going to the biggest (4,000+ square feet) estate sale ever—and for good reason. These are the “estate cleanout specialists,” after all, and they spend their days relieving folks that are downsizing, cleaning out an old barn, or selling a deceased loved one’s home of excess furniture, appliances, and other bric-a-brac.

Not only will Jellison’s leave the space empty and clean, but they’ll deliver things to where they need to go, whether it be to the dump, a clothing shop…or their own establishment. Here, you’ll find unique, top-quality retro, vintage, modern, and re-imagined items, all for reasonable prices.

Androscoggin Hospice Thrift Store

Proceeds from this shop help provide free hospice care to patients who otherwise would not be able to afford such services. The store stocks a huge variety of items to browse through—clothing, footwear, collectibles, small furniture, books, décor, games, and housewares, for example—all for a fraction of what they’re worth.

And remember—not only do you get to save a ton of money when shopping here, but you also save a person in need from facing their final days without comfort.

If you are into sports trading cards, miscellaneous collectibles, comics, or Pokémon, this is the consignment shop for you. Bring your wish list for those gaps in your collection and prepare to spend some time browsing the astounding curation of memorabilia…or simply ask one of the friendly experts on-site for some assistance.

Chances are they will have what you’re looking for—and if not, they’ll keep an ear to the ground for you.

Queens Court Flea Market

This is one of those shops where you need to walk really slow and take your time looking around with each step. Every inch of space at this locally-owned, indoor flea market is full of affordable second-hand décor, tools, furniture, knick-knacks, lighting, jewelry, electronics, artwork, and more.

Well-stocked, yes—but no jumbled mess of randomly-placed, moldy miscellanea will you find here. The shop is bright and welcoming, and everything is arranged to provide optimal inspiration.

Tots 2 Teens

Located just ten minutes from downtown Augusta, Tots 2 Teens is a family-owned shop that caters to children and teenagers, yes, but you can also find inexpensive new and used clothing for adults here, as well as toys, footwear, and décor.

And if that all wasn’t enough to get you to cross the threshold, you can also buy homemade baked goods—think huge cupcakes, cheesecake, and adorable character cake pops—to take home for an after-dinner treat (or to snarf down in the car as soon as you leave).

United Methodist Clothes Closet

Less than 15 minutes from Augusta’s downtown, the Clothes Closet is a bargain hunter’s dream come true.

The ridiculously affordable clothing is carefully vetted before going on the racks for purchase; best of all, qualified families can shop here for free.

And any profits made through clothing purchases go toward assisting needy families in the Gardiner community. Perhaps it’s time for a wardrobe overhaul—whether you need it or not—to benefit a higher cause!

A Second Life Secondhand Store

Featuring predominantly kid-centric items, clothing, and toys, this shop is less than 20 minutes from Augusta and claims to be the “largest retailer of used Bogs boots in central Maine.”

You’ll find a wide selection of DVDs, baby gear, and children’s outdoor play structures alongside other, non-kid-related items like golf clubs, small appliances, dishes, pet items, and locally-made foods.

Becky’s Second Time Around

Presented in a well-arranged, easy-to-shop fashion, Becky’s Second Time Around is located 20 minutes from downtown Augusta and features top brands for low prices.

For over three decades, this shop has been providing men and women with top-quality casual, formal, and vintage apparel, footwear, jewelry, and accessories for far less than retail prices.

Reviewers rave about the selection, pricing, and friendly, helpful service—which is probably why this establishment has been so successful and long-lived. Word gets around, you know.

Everything Kids

Anyone who has had any experience with kids knows one thing for certain: They grow fast. This fact of life means that caregivers must update entire wardrobes at least once a year for many years to come after the bundle of joy comes into the world—an expensive prospect, for sure, at today’s clothing prices.

Unless, that is, you opt for the consignment route. Offering like-new clothing, footwear, and more for newborns up to size 18, Everything Kids is located only 20 minutes from Augusta’s big-name stores—well worth the drive for the savings you’ll get. You’ll also find toys, baby gear and furniture, games, as well as locally-crafted apothecary, food, and artwork.
