A delicious Bangor turkey sandwich
Sandwiches are funny things. Sometimes, you can get just as good of a sando experience at a corner convenience store or gas station as at an upscale bistro or gourmet café. Go figure!
So, in that spirit, I left no stone unturned when delving into establishments in Bangor that offer deli-style subs and sandwiches.
This means you can track down whatever vibe or atmosphere you’re looking for to enjoy your favorite between-the-bread (or wrap…or panini…) repast—including your own living room, as a few of these are take-out-only spots.
Map of Bangor Sandwich Shops & Delis
Consider this a treasure map to the best lunch stops in Bangor.
The Legacy Sandwich
Voted Bangor’s best sandwich shop for ten years running, The Legacy Sandwich is a local hot spot for made-to-order sandwiches and subs. In addition to fresh deli meat, The Legacy also offers house-cooked bacon, chicken, and turkey for their sandwiches—and you can really taste the difference.
All of the signature sandwiches here are mouthwateringly delicious, but if I had to choose just one, I’d go for the Blue Ox Roast Beef: Roast beef, American cheese, green peppers, onions, tomatoes, salt, oil, red pepper flakes, and your choice of bleu cheese dressing or horseradish (I recommend the latter for a bit more zip).

Harvest Moon Deli
With three locations within city limits (and four more in the surrounding communities), you can rest assured you’re never far from a delicious sandwich in Bangor; since 2007, Harvest Moon Deli has been voted The Best of the Best in Greater Bangor.
The top-quality ingredients, like sliced-daily meats and cheeses, fresh vegetables, local bread, and homemade condiments all combine to make your sandwich or panini a true culinary experience. The menu is sure to elicit groans of hunger from your belly and includes salads, homemade soups, and sides in addition to the made-to-order sandwiches, panini, and wraps.
For a true taste sensation, try the Olive & Let Die: Roasted turkey, mozzarella, tomatoes, black olives, homemade pesto, and cherry pepper mayo.
Location: 72 Columbia St, Bangor, ME 04401, 1018 Stillwater Avenue, & 366 Griffin Road

The Coffee Pot Sandwich Shop
The subs at The Coffee Pot are all about tradition; for over eight decades, these folks haven’t strayed from their original lineup and recipes—because why mess with success? Sandwiches come with green peppers, oil, onions, tomatoes, and seasonings; your choice of toppings (salami, ham, turkey, roast beef, tuna or egg salad, cheese, and pickles) are then laid on top of the bread, making these subs true “Coffee Pots.”
All of the freshly baked bread comes from nearby bakeries, and you can choose from wheat or white rolls and wraps; there are also gluten-free options.
Location: 652 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401

Bangor Sandwich Company
New to the city, the Bangor Sandwich Company offers loaded-to-the-gills subs burgeoning with toppings and fillings—each one providing at least a four-napkin dining experience.
Made fresh for you, these babies are loaded with only top-quality ingredients, and all are on locally-baked rolls. The menu is full of flavorful, creative hot and cold sandwich options; the latter come with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles, olive oil, vinegar, and oregano (add-on options include olives, jalapeños, banana peppers, and bacon).
My hands-down favorite is The Speziato (Spicy Italian): Capicola, genoa salami, pepperoni, provolone, Swiss and American cheese, jalapeños, banana peppers, and crushed red pepper.

Papa Gambino’s Pizza & Subs
These locally-owned favorites (two locations) have been serving up their classic fare since 1972—and their pizza is just as popular as their amazing subs. The rolls are baked in-house every day, and every sub on the menu is made to order.
Cold subs come with tomatoes, green peppers, onions, pickles, salt, pepper, and 100% virgin olive oil; imported black olives and hot sauce are also on offer. The most popular item is the signature Godfather: Capicola, genoa salami, ham, pepperoni, provolone, Swiss, and American cheese (and all the toppings listed above). Thank you, Godfather.
Location: 267 State St, Bangor, ME 04401, and 622 Hammond Street

Angelo’s Pizzeria
Hot and cold subs, wraps, sandwiches, clubs…if you’re craving it, they’ve got it at Angelo’s (along with a plethora of other delicious menu items, if you’re not feeling sandwich-y).
Angelo’s slices or shreds all of their meats, veggies, and cheese on site, and they even season and cook the chicken themselves. If you’re looking for something to both banish the hangries and quell your craving for comfort food, try the Combo hot sub: Meatballs, sausages, provolone, and house-made marinara sauce.

Tri-City Pizza
More often than not, if you find a great pizza joint, then you’ve found a great sub joint…which is the case with Tri-City. For more than five decades, this family-run establishment has been providing the Greater Bangor area with amazing fare—including their famous Fireball sandwiches (a secret blend of spicy seasonings, meats, and cheeses ensconced in a fluffy bulkie roll).
For the most part, it’s build-your-own at Tri-City; you pick your favorite meats, cheese, veggies, and condiments—and they make it to your specifications.

Corner Store
The name of this spot is misleading; yes, it’s a corner convenience store, but they’ve also got a fantastic deli counter where drool-worthy, made-to-order subs and sandwiches can be had.
There is no dine-in service—but that’s ok because you can scoop up your order along with your beverages and snacks of choice on your way through the store…and head home and eat in your jammies in front of the TV, if you want.
Whether you’re a hot or cold sub kind of person, you can’t choose wrong here…but I suggest the Chicken Philly, made with fresh ground chicken, onions, peppers, mushrooms, and cheese.
Location: 575 Hammond St, Bangor, ME 04401

Fairmount Market
In addition to a busy deli counter, this popular community market has been providing everything from auto parts and pet supplies to groceries and household goods since 1925.
As well as pizza, salads, and fried chicken, you’ll find sandwiches, hot and cold subs (including Italians—I recommend the Fireball version if you’re a fan of spicy), and wraps—all made to your liking with fresh ingredients and six different bread options.
Location: 662 Hammond St, Bangor, ME 04401

Freshies Deli
A Maine roadside favorite, Freshies has 15 other locations within the state, all at service stations. And while that may not sound appetizing to you, trust me when I say you won’t be disappointed when ordering a sandwich or sub from Freshies.
The menu offerings are plentiful and are made fresh daily, or to order. For a sub that will fill your belly for lunch—and maybe even dinner—try the Steak and Cheese Bomb: Slow-braised chuck steak, mozzarella, provolone, red onions, and green peppers on a fluffy sub roll.
Location: 1187 Union St, Bangor, ME 04401
Website: Freshies Deli
In addition to all of the fine establishments covered above, Bangor is home to some other trustworthy franchise spots (Firehouse Subs, Jersey Mike’s, and several Subway locations) for those of you who prefer to stick within your sandwich comfort zone.
