Disc golfers in Bath, Maine

If you are a disc golf player (for those of you that aren’t, it’s similar to golf, using plastic discs and raised baskets instead of balls, clubs, and holes) and are looking for courses in Bath, Maine, you’ll have to expand your horizons a bit and plan on a short commute to reach one.

Because while there are no disc golf establishments within Bath’s city limits, there are plenty to enjoy in nearby communities—all within a 35-minute drive—ranging from free, bare-bones options in public spaces to well-maintained, pay-to-play courses with various amenities.

Tripping Gnome Farm

This family farm that grows and sells “field- and forest-grown produce” also features a free, par-3, year-round disc golf course. With MVP targets and natural tees at all 9 holes, this fast, meadow-style course is perfect for all skill levels—and if you don’t happen to have your discs when visiting the farm, they have some to lend.

Less than 25 minutes from downtown Bath, the staff at Tripping Gnome are friendly, the course is well-tended and scenic, and the price is right (did I mention it was FREE?). Oh, and be sure to buy some seasonal, delicious produce to enjoy while you play a round.

Sabattus Disc Golf & Pro Shop

Sabattus Disc Golf & Pro Shop, located just over 25 minutes from Bath, opened in 2005 and is the golden standard of disc golf in the region. Offering four distinctly different courses to accommodate all levels of play, virtually anyone can find a course to love here.

The 9-hole, par-3 Owl is SDG’s 1,592-foot beginner option for kids, new players, or to utilize as a warm-up round; its wider fairways and short holes evidence this.

The 6,491-foot, par 73 Hawk, while still beginner-friendly, introduces players to a bit of wooded play in addition to open spaces along its 18 holes, and thus is labeled as intermediate.

The more technical, 18-hole, 5,028-foot Falcon is an advanced, 61-par option and is ranked 35th in the state by UDisc; and SDG’s expert, 6,985-foot course, The 72-par Eagle, offers 17 wooded holes and only 1 open one, in addition to tricky elevation challenges, narrow fairways, and highly technical shots.

All of the courses feature concrete tee pads; the three 18-hole options have DISCatcher Pro targets while the Owl has MVP baskets. Bathrooms are available, as is drinking water; dogs are not allowed. SDG also boasts the most expansive, well-stocked pro shop in the area—arguably, in the state.

Acker’s Acres

Established in 2002 and only 28 minutes from Bath’s center, Acker’s Acres has two year-round, 18-hole, pay-to-play courses, The Twisted and The Wicked. While both are well-maintained, clearly marked, and feature Chainstar targets and concrete tees, there are marked differences between the two.

The Wicked is 5,218 feet of par-69, moderately hilly, wooded play, while The Twisted offers a mostly flat, heavily wooded, 72-par course and 6,311 feet of play.

Acker’s also has great amenities like a pro shop, bathrooms, tables along the course, and an on-site café—Another Par…and Grill—and dogs are not allowed.

Pratt’s Brook Park

Like many free disc golf courses located in multi-use public parks, this one lacks amenities and rigid upkeep.

But if you’re just looking for a quick 9-hole run without needing to open your wallet, this spot is for you—and not only is it less than a half-hour from Bath, but the park allows dogs, too. Created in 2012, the Pratt’s Brook Park course is rudimentary but functional; the fairways are mostly flat and lightly wooded, the targets are single-chain, the tees are worn gravel, and while there is signage, it hasn’t been maintained and some are lying on the ground, so keep your eyes peeled.

Also, be on the watch for other folks in the park that may not be aware of the course sharing the property.

Twin Brook Recreation Area

While also located in a public park, Twin Brook is a pay-to-play, dog-friendly course that uses a “suggested donation” honor box system. Built in 2013, this 9-hole, 36-par course is 30 minutes from Bath and offers 2,817 feet of play, with DISCatcher Pro targets and turf tees.

The course is flat and lightly wooded, built mostly in the open and sharing space with the rest of the park; players cite the need to be on the lookout for unleashed dogs and pedestrians.

CR Farm Disc Golf

Open all year (the course is cleared after it snows), this pay-to-play, 21-hole course is only 33 minutes from Bath and definitely worth the commute. Offering Mach III targets, concrete tees, and 5,792 feet of 71-par play, CR Farm Disc Golf opened in 2007 and provides players with a mostly flat, heavily wooded course, making for some tasty technical shots.

There are tables and trash/recycling bins along the course as well as bathroom access, and the pro shop also offers snacks and beverages.

Devils Grove Disc Golf

Another year-round option just over a half-hour from downtown Bath, Devils Grove offers two well-maintained, pay-to-play, 18-hole/64-par courses, both of which are moderately hilly/wooded.

The tight, 4,107-foot Demon course opened in 2013 and offers moderate elevation changes, rubber tees, and Arroyo Vortex targets; the longer, more open, 5,481-foot Devil course—which was established four years later than The Demon—has concrete tees and Kingpin targets. Restrooms and a pro shop are on-site, and dogs are allowed.

Pineland Farms Disc Golf

Just over 30 minutes from Bath, Pineland Farms offers two 18-hole, honor-box-payment courses, neither of which allow dogs. The 7,155-foot Patriot course closes in the winter (and becomes a cross-country ski trail), and the 4,116-foot Minuteman is open all year.

Very hilly and moderately wooded, the 61-par Patriot opened in 2015 and features mixed-surface tees, DISCatcher Pro targets, tricky topography, and other challenging hazards.

The 60-par Minuteman, which features rubber tees and Patriot targets, is a bit more beginner-friendly, offering fewer elevation changes and more open space.

Pineland Farms also has a stocked pro shop where you can either purchase or rent discs, and there are bathrooms and drinking water available.

Bittersweet Ridge Disc Golf

Not only does Bittersweet Ridge Disc Golf offer two 18-hole, pay-to-play courses only 35 minutes from Bath, but they also have a course cat (Bob), which is why dogs are not allowed on either of them.

Both feature 5’x10’ concrete tees, DISCatcher Pro targets, and are open from 8 a.m. until dusk until the snow flies (or melts). Built in 2013, the 4,700-foot, 60-par Sweetside is great for intermediate play and is moderately hilly and wooded; the 6,300-foot, 64-par North course, which was added in 2015, is more advanced and features hilly, heavily wooded terrain.
