Freshly baked bread from a Bangor bakery

You know that hollow feeling you get in your tummy, typically when you’re spending the day out and about being a tourist or just checking items off your endless to-do list? It’s a sensation that falls somewhere squarely between the hangries and the munchies; to vanquish it usually requires some sort of edible deliciousness laced with approximately enough sweetness to give an elephant a sugar high…although a freshly-baked, butter-slathered slice of sourdough could do the trick, too.

Me? I say it’s really all about the carbs, because that’s how I cinnamon roll…and when it comes to bakeries, Bangor has more than enough to choose from. So, bookmark this write-up for the next time you’re craving starchy deliciousness in the Bangor area. Oh, and you’re welcome.

Map of Bangor Bakeries

These delectable Bangor bakeries will satisfy your sweet tooth, quench your lunch cravings, and have you ordering seconds. Check out the map below to locate your next lunch location of choice.

Frank’s Bake Shop & Catering

Since 1945, Frank’s has been baking custom cakes, sweets, and breads of the day from scratch, every day. When you’ve been doing something for that long, you’re bound to get really good at it.

You’ll find all manner of pastries, sweet breads, coffee cakes, cookies, brownies, and bars on offer here, as well as a plethora of fabulous cake options—majestic works of confectionary art, including breathtaking wedding cakes.

You can also enjoy breakfast and lunch here—all made with Frank’s homemade bread, of course—and the catering program is highly-rated.

The Sweet Spot Cookies

Another popular local dessert caterer, The Sweet Spot Cookies specializes in creatively-decorated, iced sugar cookies, yes…but there are other yummy treats to be devoured here.

Cakes and cupcakes are a couple of other tempting options—and like the cookies, the sky is the limit when it comes to customized decoration. Any theme you can dream up can be accommodated—graduation, baby shower, over the hill, holidays, retirement—with amazing creativity.

Gosselin’s Bakery

Famous for their mouth-watering, crave-worthy donuts, Gosselin’s is hard-core old-school. With a virtually nonexistent web presence and a cash-only policy, it’s hard to believe they’ve been around since 1945—but one bite of any one of the family’s heirloom donut recipes (my current favorites are the chocolate coconut and the honey-glazed) provides clarity into this business’s longevity.

These popular confections are made by hand every day—and trust me when I say they go fast. Once they’re gone, you’ll have to wait another 24 hours to have one…so be sure to set your alarm clock and get there early if you want to get your hands on some.

Wildflour Cake Design

Wildflour isn’t the type of bakery you can just waltz in on a whim to shush your sugar craving; this is a pre-order-only kind of bake shop. If you’re planning an event or gathering that will require a cake or perhaps some small, hand-held desserts, though, this is a fantastic choice.

Cakes are available in a host of sizes, flavors, designs, and other options; the bakers here are happy to work with you to achieve a show-stopping dream dessert. Smaller desserts include macaroons, cake or dessert shooters, whoopie pies, cookies, chocolate-covered Oreos, and brownies; Wildflour even has “cake pints,” which are ice cream pints filled with layers of cake and frosting instead. Brilliant!

Bagel Central

Don’t be fooled by the name—you can get far more than the 18 varieties of delicious, fresh-baked bagels on offer here. These hard-working folks also offer homemade breads, including challah, bialys, focaccia, rye, whole wheat, and white; there is a gluten-free option, too.

And if your sweet tooth is crying out to be satiated, you’ll have plenty of made-from-scratch things to choose from; think cheesecake, brownies, eclairs, fudge, biscotti, cannoli, cream horns…you get the picture. Bagel Central also has vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free dessert options; dietary restrictions won’t keep you from enjoying a treat here.

Governor’s Restaurant & Bakery

With six locations in Maine, Governor’s has been an in-state institution since 1959. In addition to their popular, family-style restaurants, the full-service bakeries at these long-standing establishments are renowned for fresh, quality goods at affordable prices.

You’ll find cream pies, cookies, fruit pies, huge 3-layer cakes, dinner rolls, breads, muffins, and giant cinnamon rolls at Governor’s—and you can even have many of these items shipped frozen, straight from the bakery.

Wicked Brew Café & Coffee Shop

This women-owned café features a variety of house-baked bagels, breads, and sweet treats on offer, along with an expansive menu of coffee and hot drinks.

Some of the homemade baked goods include scones, sticky buns, muffins, cakes, pies, and cookies; if you’re feeling like having something a bit more savory, opt for the quiche or bagels.

There is also breakfast (served all day) and lunch available at Wicked Brew—just be sure to leave room for dessert.

Bangin’ Whoopie

This bakery has a laser focus on one treat only: The whoopie pie, otherwise known as the State of Maine’s official dessert. Since 2012, Bangin’ Whoopie has gone from serving up just four flavors of this delectable delight to offering fifty different versions, some of which are award-winning combinations, like chocolate cake with caramel sea-salt filling, or blueberry cake with cream cheese filling.

The list of full-time and part-time flavors also includes vegan, dairy-free, and egg-free options…but not having any of those dietary limitations, I recommend trying the Spicy Hot Chocolate Whoopie Pie (chocolate cake with chili-infused filling).

Location: 6 Water St, Bangor, ME 04401

Cake Mama

Another pre-order establishment on this list, Cake Mama specializes in (yup, you guessed it) cakes. These creative delights come in several different sizes, in six flavors, with four filling options—so you won’t go wanting when it comes to customization.

There are cupcakes and donuts available, too—also fully customizable—and pre-decorated mini-cakes are on offer in the store, with no pre-order necessary.

Brick Oven

If you’re just on the prowl for fresh, scratch-made rolls and bread, Brick Oven is a stellar choice. For over a century (!!!), Brick Oven has been churning out high-quality, no-additive goods right in Bangor for homes and businesses far and wide.

Bulkie rolls, sub rolls, dinner rolls, challah bread, and more are all baked fresh every day—and every item can be made with whole wheat, as well. As they say at Brick Oven, “Great bread makes the meal great!” I wholeheartedly concur.
