The Deep Blue in Kennebunkport, Maine

The Deep Blue

Often confused—and referred to interchangeably—with her next-door neighbor, Kennebunkport, the coastal town of Kennebunk (“The only village in the world so named”) has plenty of boast-worthy merits of her own; its upscale, tourist-friendly Lower Village area, especially, is frequently thought to be part of “the Port.”

And while many of “the Bunk’s” upper-scale gift shop options are located in that area, there are a fair number of fantastic stores back toward the center of town on U.S. Route One and Western Avenue.

The Deep Blue

Using mostly gifts from the sea, the artist-owner of The Deep Blue utilizes her creative talents—and her obsessive beach-combing skills—to craft gorgeous works of wonder.

Handmade sea glass jewelry, ornaments, mosaics, and wall art are just the beginning of what you’ll find here—and the designs made with mere mussel shells for one-of-a-kind, framed works of art will take your breath away.

Hearth & Soul

You’ll find a bit of everything at this sweet little storefront, located right in the middle of Kennebunk’s Main Street district—where on-street parking is still free.

Reproduction primitives, home goods, whimsical décor, lamps, rugs, and seasonal items are specialties here, but you’ll also find a multitude of Maine-made gifts.

Nature’s Gifts

It seemed that during the beginning of the Covid nightmare, many folks became backyard birders.

And if you happen to be on the hunt for a gift for one of these sorts, flap your way over to Nature’s Gifts, located just a minute or two south of downtown Kennebunk. Feeders, baths, guidebooks, houses, and seeds—you’ll find it all here.

Nature’s Gifts also has a wonderful array of nature-centric, locally-crafted home and garden items, perfect for any yard-proud friend or family member.

Kennebunkport Brewing Company Shipyard Store

It’s things like this that probably confuse people in the first place; this store and its namesake are located in Kennebunk, not Kennebunkport.

But either way, it’s a great option for Shipyard-branded apparel, dog treats, koozies, travel mugs, and glassware, along with beer- or Maine-centric gifts like books, artwork, and clothing.

Located just downstairs from Federal Jack’s Brewpub, you can browse the goods while you wait for your table.

Zen and Company

The helpful shopkeepers at this “cultural gifts store” can help you find the ideal gift item for that spiritual person in your life. High-quality clothing, journals, statuary, crystals, meditation aids, artwork, and much more can be found at Zen and Company.

And if you aren’t sure what you’re looking for, the folks here are passionate about helping your (or that of your gift recipient’s) center of energy become “open, aligned, and balanced,” and can direct you to the products that best suit your needs.

Morph Gallery & Emporium

If it is pleasing to the eye or inspires a giggle or two, the owner of this lively shop will put it on her shelves.

Many of the items at Morph are handmade and are at the confluence of “the elegant, cherishable, whimsical, and unexpected.” Stationery, linens, linens, books, custom frames, homemade quilts, artwork, and jewelry are just a few of the high-quality items you’ll find here.

Kennebunk Toy Company

For over two decades, the Kennebunk Toy Company has been delighting children with every amusement imaginable. Located in the heart of Kennebunk’s Main Street business district, this vibrant little shop is a child’s dream come true (and potentially every parent’s nightmare if said child has a cranky case of the “gimmes”).

Games, toys, kits, puzzles, books, crafts, dolls, sensory toys…I could probably fill an entire page if I included every category here. The kind folks at KTC also offer curbside pickup and gift-wrapping services.

Shoppers Village Card & Gift

Perfect for a last-minute gift or card, Shoppers Village is also home to Mail-it Unlimited—which is quite handy, if the last-minute gift in question also needs to be shipped somewhere.

Loaded with Maine- and nautically-themed items, seasonal décor, candles, jewelry, bath and body products, and home/garden décor (just a mere taste of what you’ll find), this store also stocks plenty of greeting cards and wrapping paper.

Talk about one-stop shopping! There are also puzzles, stuffed animals, a wedding section, America- and sports-centric products, and much more.

Maine Art Hill

More of an art village than a single store, the Maine Art Hill is made up of four establishments: The Gallery, Shows, The Grand, and Studios.

And if you have been searching for a unique, artisan-made gift that will knock the recipient’s socks off, your search is over.

No matter what medium you’re looking for, chances are you’ll find it at the Art Hill: sculptures of stone, wood, or metal, paintings, photography, furniture, ceramics, pottery, glasswork, wind sculptures, and much more.

Coffee Roasters of the Kennebunks

Yes, this mercantile-vibey store is a café, small-batch coffee roastery, and purveyor of bulk teas.

But it also features a kick-butt collection of kitchen-y gifts, coffee and tea accessories, artisan oils and vinegars, specialty foods, serving boards, and hysterical cocktail napkins—a plethora of options to curate from for all manner of gift baskets.

And of course, you can buy as many bags of freshly-roasted coffee beans as you want to include in your gift basket…or for yourself.

Cherie’s

Cherie’s is my favorite local bakery—not just because there is an amazing selection of homemade confections and meals, but because I can peruse the specialty wine and gourmet foods section while I wait for my order.

You can put together a hostess gift bundle in a flash here—elegant condiments and snacks, cheeses from around the world, a curated beer and wine selection, locally-roasted coffee beans…and of course, freshly-baked cookies, pies, pastries, and entrees.
