Wells Harbor in Wells, Maine
Wells is a coastal town in Southern Maine, centrally located between the towns of Ogunquit and Kennebunk and not far from the larger beach area of York. And at only 28 miles southwest of Portland, ME and 70 miles north of Boston, MA it is a convenient place to visit.
At the time of its founding Ogunquit and Kennebunk were considered part of Wells. Wells now stands on its own merits and is a popular place for visitors during the warmer months and many hundreds of them flock here during the summer.

This pleasant tourist destination is referred to as ‘The friendliest town in Maine’ by both residents and visitors alike. With its beautiful beaches, nature preserves and trails, plentiful stores and restaurants, Wells has something of interest for everyone.

Wells Harbor
Wells beaches provided a nice landing place for early travelers and thus attracted settlers. It was founded in 1643 and is the 3rd oldest town in Maine. It was originally named Webhannet, meaning ‘at the clear stream’, by the Abenaki Indians, because of the clear waters in what is now the Webhannet River.
In Wells Harbor you will see many boats, yachts, lobster fishermen and fishing charter boats. You can canoe or kayak up the Webhannet River or paddleboard in the calm waters here.
Wells Harbor Park has a picturesque gazebo where the town hosts free concerts all summer long as well as craft fairs, the annual Chili Fest and annual HarborFest.
Wells Reserve
Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farms is a National Estuarine Research Reserve that contains 2,250 acres of salt marsh, freshwater wetland, beach, dune, forest and field.
Take a guided nature walk and learn about the coast and estuaries and how this preserve is helping to maintain the natural ecosystems in Southern Maine. The Reserve also contains 7 miles of walking trails that lead to salt water marshlands, bird sanctuaries and their own beach.
The beautiful restored barn and carriage house at Laudholm Farm is a popular wedding and summer function venue and not to be missed on your visit here.
Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge
This preservation for salt marshes and estuaries for migrating birds is located on the border of Wells and Kennebunk. It was established in 1966 in cooperation with the state of Maine, and contains approximately 50 miles of coastline between York County and Cumberland County.
Antique Capital of Maine
Wells has more than 25 antiques stores, most of them located right on Rte 1, and has more than earned its title for the Antique Capital of Maine. Some even refer to Wells as the Antique Capital of the World!
No matter what you’re looking for, or if you’re just browsing, you’ll find something that catches your eye and probably more than one!
Jewelry, art, sculptures, rare books and period furniture are just a few of the types of antiques that you’ll find here. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to browse!
Don’t forget to make time to stop in at the Wells Auto Museum also. This family friendly attraction hosts 80 antique and classic cars and vintage motorcycles as well as memorabilia, vintage arcade games and music boxes.
Shopping, Restaurants & Other Attractions
While you’re visiting or staying in Wells you’ll find everything that you need at local stores conveniently located on Rte 1. There you’ll find Hannaford’s grocery store, CVS and Walgreens pharmacies and Reny’s, a local favorite with a little bit of everything.
As for food… pretty much any type that you are craving can be found in Wells: seafood, steak, pizza, ice cream, pub style, Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Mexican. You have your choice of casual, fine dining, take-out places and food trucks.
Some of the local’s favorites are: Mike’s Clam Shack, Congdon’s Doughnuts, Well’s Steakhouse, Feile Irish Pub and Joshua’s.
Don’t forget to leave room for ice cream! The Scoop Deck and Big Daddy’s are two popular places to try some local flavor: blueberry, pumpkin or Maine Moose Tracks.
And if you’re looking for souvenirs or sweets to take back home you’ll find just what you’re looking for at Perkins Cove Candies and The Bistro at R & R Chocolates. The Bistro also serves specialty sandwiches, cakes and not to be missed cannolis!
If you’re looking for something else to do other than enjoy the beach, there are a few options: Golf courses, mini golf, movie theater, arcades and a Farmer’s Market.

Wells has something for everyone and every price range. Whether you’re looking to stay at a waterfront resort, a hotel or motel on the beach, a cozy bed & breakfast or a fully equipped condo you’ll be sure to find what you are searching for in Wells.
There are also campgrounds nearby that offer a more budget friendly vacation. Most of these have their own small general store, swimming pool, playground and other family entertainment.
And if you’re interested in staying for a longer visit consider renting a seaside cottage or house. This will make your visit more comfortable and save you some of the added expenses of eating out all of the time. You may even get your own private beach access with your rental!
