Fresh pizza topped with basil from Wells, Maine
In my humble opinion, there is no meal as quintessential and addictive as pizza. There’s a flavor to match every palate, with endless combinations and styles to create the perfect, individualized culinary masterpiece.

And what better time to enjoy such a repast than when you’re on vacation—particularly if you’re sitting on a beach chair, soaking up the sun, and listening to the waves roll in? Wells has a good number of long-established pizza spots to choose from, whether you’re here for a week of fun in the sun or live here year-round (lucky you, if so).

All you have to do is decide if you want to partake of your pizza whilst still in your swimming trunks, or put in a bit of effort to shower and make yourself presentable before dining out.

Seacoast Pizza & Pasta

Seacoast Pizza is the epitome of a traditional pizza place. Featuring indoor seating as well as picnic tables on an outdoor patio, this bright, busy spot offers pizza-by-the-slice from an expansive display case as well as made-to-order pies.

Choose from the enormous Sicilian-style pizza with a square, thick crust, or opt for a traditional round New York-style pie; my favorite is the special NY-style Lasagna Pizza, with mozzarella, tomato sauce, and ground beef.

There are plenty of other non-pizza options (appetizers, salads, calzones, pasta dinners, subs, dessert, and much more) on Seacoast’s menu; be aware that the shop is typically closed from Christmas week through the beginning of February.

Spiller’s Pizza & Deli

Located way off the beaten track (read: Route One), Spiller’s is a working farm and convenience market where you can pick apples, strawberries, or pumpkins, grab a few groceries, and order pizza for dinner all in one go.

The place feels like a real old-time country store, and there’s always a Spiller family member behind the counter. The pizza is made fresh to order seven days a week, and no matter what topping you’re looking for, chances are they have it somewhere on the shelves in the store.

Choose from a 10” or 16” pie, and then go outside and take in the geese paddling around in the pond while you wait. And no matter what time of day it is, I recommend ordering the Breakfast Pizza for a kicky morning meal that’ll hold you over until dinner: Light sauce, pizza cheese, onions, peppers, jalapeños, mushrooms, bacon, ham, and scrambled eggs.

Pizza Market

Offering dine-in service as well as online ordering for take-out and delivery, the Pizza Market is another classic pizza joint in Wells.

Located right off Route One and just a few hundred feet from the local cinema, this is the perfect spot to grab a quick and delicious pizza repast before catching a show. With 14” and 20” pies on offer—as well as a 10” gluten-free option—there’s a size and flavor for everyone here.

For a real all-in-one pizza experience, give the Chicken Finger & French Fries pie a shot: Breaded and baked chicken, French fries, mozzarella, and ranch sauce.

Meserve’s Market

The hand-carved sign out in front of Meserve’s proudly claims they’ve been “village grocers since 1865,” which certainly is impressive.

What’s even more impressive are their pizza offerings, though—despite perhaps not enjoying the same lengthy history. Whether you opt for a grab-and-go slice or a 10” or 16” pie made just for you, the dough and toppings are always fresh.

And while there are only five specialty pizza options, you can choose from twenty toppings and create your own signature pie. Although I don’t know why you’d have to strain your brain to do so when there’s a Steak & Cheese pizza on offer: Steak, cheese, green peppers, onions, and mushrooms.

Home Town Pizza

The owner of Home Town Pizza (Red, the Pizza Guy) describes his pies as “Greek/Italian/French style.” An auspicious description, for sure, especially if you’re a fan of all three types.

There is indoor seating and take-out available, and everything is fresh and made to order. The menu matches the aesthetic here—no frills, no fancy—and rather than clutter things up with a long list of specialty pies, Red just allows you to choose your own combination of toppings from the list of 19 options so that they can make it exactly how you like it.

Choose from either a 10” or 16” pizza—and there is also a 10” gluten-free crust available.

Litchfield’s Bar & Grill

Open 6 days a week (closed Mondays) for dining inside, outside, and take-out, Litchfield’s has a fabulous, extensive, pub-style menu that includes six 10” specialty pizzas as well as a list of 13 toppings if you’d rather concoct your own pie.

A cheese pizza starts at just $10, and toppings are a mere $1 each; there is also a gluten-free crust option starting at $13. If you’re looking for a real taste sensation—or if you just can’t decide between a burger and a pizza—try Litchfield’s Cheeseburger Pizza and satisfy both cravings: Ground beef, dill pickles, shredded lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and Thousand Islands dressing.

Forbes Restaurant

This local, family-owned favorite is open May through October and has been in business since 1921.

And while the most popular items at Forbes are the seafood and ice cream, the pizza there is nothing to turn up your nose at. Opt to enjoy your pie in the dining room, or get it to go for a day on the beach, which is just a short stroll across the parking lot.

The pizza menu is short but sweet; choose from a 10” or 16” Cheese, Meat Lover’s (my favorite), Pepperoni, or Loaded pie—or select your own toppings from the list of eight options.
