A comfortable Wiscasset hotel room
Wiscasset, Maine, has come a long way from being “the worm capital of the world” (a nod to the town’s former primary industry of fishing bait) to “the prettiest village in Maine.” And whether you agree with the claim’s sweeping sentiment, it’s hard to argue with the fact that Wiscasset is indeed pretty.

Two-and-a-half seasons out of the year, however, you may not even realize you’ve driven through this quintessential riverside hamlet—as the saying goes: Don’t blink, or you’ll miss it. But during the summer months and shoulder seasons, you can’t miss it, because you’ll most probably find yourself sitting in a long line of traffic on Main Street as travelers make their way past the town’s claim to fame, Red’s Eats, famous for their abundant lobster rolls.

There are a couple of local lodging options to choose from if you have a few days to explore Wiscasset; the quaint shops and historic architecture of Main Street are delightful to experience, and the surrounding neighborhoods are a wonderful area to wander on foot.

There are also plenty of trustworthy hotels and bed and breakfasts within 10 miles of the town center if you don’t find what you’re looking for in Wiscasset.

Wiscasset Woods Lodge

The first cabins of this rustic compound were built at the same time as the Atlantic Highway (Route One) between 1910-1915. While many changes have been wrought by the different owners over the years, it is still, at its heart, an affordable, casual, and comfortable place to lay your head at the end of a long day of travel or hard-core vacationing.

Choose from cottages or motel-style accommodations—all have been recently updated, and several cottages were renovated and expanded into suite-style spaces.

The motel rooms are larger than the cottage rooms, and some are pet-friendly. The folks at the Lodge also provide a complimentary, made-from-scratch hot breakfast for guests at the Lodge; count on menu items like breakfast meats, eggs, potatoes, buttermilk pancakes, blueberry cobbler, Amish oatmeal, and ham and cheese strata, along with a long list of cold items to choose from.
