Augusta lobster ready to be made into a lobster roll

Despite being the third lowest-populated capital city in the country, Augusta—which is enjoying an ongoing revitalization—still holds her own when it comes to lodging and dining amenities.

And of course, being in Maine, it only stands to reason that you’re going to want to know where to get a good lobster roll when visiting this former mill town.

Have no fear—there are plenty to be had in Augusta…but just for good measure, I’ll throw in a few visit-worthy spots in adjacent towns—because you can never have too many good lobster roll options.

Map of Augusta Lobster Roll Locations

This map includes all of the restaurants we’ve mentioned, both in and around Augusta, perfect for hunting down your next favorite lobster roll place while exploring things to do in Augusta Maine tonight:

Otto’s on the River

Lobster rolls are prepared differently at Otto’s, and faithful customers flock here to experience that difference.

You can choose between a whole or half lobster, which is then served on top of lobster salad, all tidily nestled into a fresh roll.

There is both indoor and seasonal outdoor seating available with great views of the mighty Kennebec River, as well as full bar service.

Be sure to time your visit properly, though—because the lobster rolls are only served at lunchtime at Otto’s.

Augusta Seafood, Inc.

Augusta Seafood has been in the business since 1976, and while primarily a wholesale seafood market, there are still lobster rolls to be had here.

While not advertised on their website, rest assured that you can get a fresh, stuffed-to-the-gills…er, claws…lobster roll here, made to order while you wait.

There is no dine-in service at Augusta Seafood, but there are plenty of parks nearby for you to settle in and enjoy your freshwater feast.

Damon’s Pizza & Italians

Since 1950, locals have kept their eyes on Damon’s familiar roadside sign for the arrival of lobster roll season here—typically the second half of the calendar year—because they are not to be missed.

Light on the mayo and lettuce, you can count on the roll to be lobster-forward, as it should be.

And if you don’t feel like venturing out, no worries—because Damon’s delivers, too.

College Carry-Out

With a hearty serving of 100% knuckle and claw meat piled into freshly-baked rolls with just enough mayonnaise, the lobster rolls at College Carry-Out are local legend.

Pizza isn’t the only thing this popular take-out spot does right, as evidenced by repeatedly being awarded various local “Best of the Best” titles—that, and the fact that it’s been in business since 1981.

The Red Barn

If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “Hmm, I wonder what it would be like to eat a lobster roll with 3 lobsters’ worth of meat stuffed inside,” then wonder no more. The Red Barn—also known for fantastic fried chicken—does just that with their “Crustacean Elation” (there is also a ¼-pound and ½-pound of lobster meat option).

The only drawback is that this local favorite is seasonal—so if it’s before April, you’ll just have to wait to get your fix.

Note that supply chain issues have affected consistent availability, so be sure to double-check The Red Barn’s menu before you set your sights on acquiring your roll here.

MJEK Seafood & Grill

Now, we’ll venture forth to a few nearby communities in search of between-the-bun crustacean delights.

MJEK is seasonal and located just 15 minutes from Augusta center.

The rolls here are made to order with a touch of mayo, just a bit of lettuce, and come in two sizes, depending on your appetite…but really, why would you ever order a SMALL lobster roll?

Location: 239 Lakeview Dr, China, ME 04358

Hallowell Seafood & Produce

Just under ten minutes south of Augusta sits Hallowell, another spot where you can track down fantastic lobster rolls.

At Hallowell Seafood & Produce—primarily a seafood market—you can order one of their made-to-order, overflowing rolls to go.

If the weather is nice, take your feast across Water Street and find a bench on the Kennebec…just watch out for prowling, hungry gulls. Can you blame them?

Location: 197 Water St, Hallowell, ME 04347

The Quarry Tap Room

Also located in nearby Hallowell, The Quarry Tap Room is a delightful dine-in spot if you prefer a more traditional, table-service experience in which to devour your lobster roll.

Cozy and tavern-like with indoor and seasonal outdoor seating, this eatery has delicious options for your lobster roll enjoyment; have your fresh Maine crustacean meat either mixed with a bit of mayo, lemon, and chives or opt for a simple drizzle of melted butter instead.

Location: 122 Water St, Hallowell, ME 04347

Mulligan’s Market

Just a 15-minute drive west will bring you to this unassuming little convenience store—one that hides a sensational secret: Fresh, made-to-order food, including three sizes of lobster rolls.

They come in small (1/4 pound of meat), medium (1/2 pound), and large (1 pound) …but as I’ve indicated previously—if you’re getting a lobster roll, then GET a lobster roll.

Location: 926 Western Ave, Manchester, ME 04351

Lighthouse Wine & Seafood

A few doors down from Mulligan’s, Lighthouse is another lobster roll destination that never disappoints.

Also selling fresh lobsters by the pound—which they will steam for you if you wish—Lighthouse’s rolls are made while you wait, and are served fresh on a toasted brioche roll with only enough mayo to hold things together—with no lettuce to be found.

Location: 918 Western Ave, Manchester, ME 04351

I also feel strangely compelled to throw in an honorable mention—and while it certainly isn’t a lobster roll, the mouthwatering Crustacean Melt at Cloud 9 Restaurant located at the Senator Inn in Augusta is a true crustacean taste sensation.

So, if you prefer your lobster served up warm instead of cold and are a fan of all manner of shellfish, read on: Lobster, shrimp, and crabmeat tossed with a smidgen of mayo and topped with melted gouda and bacon.
