mouthwatering Kennebunkport crêpes
Kennebunkport is a charming, waterfront community—and has far more to offer than a quick peek at the Bush compound at Walker’s Point.

Offering unique and diverse shopping, world-class dining side-by-side with renowned seafood shacks, and the work of talented artists of all mediums evident in the multitude of galleries, Kennebunkport is quintessential, coastal New England at its best.

The ideal way to enjoy all that this seaside area has to offer is to get up early and set out on a leisurely, pedestrian exploration—which means a hearty and potentially mobile breakfast.

Note that some of these establishments are seasonal—and even if not noted as such, be sure to check websites for any changes in hours before setting your sights on where to have breakfast in Kennebunkport.

Map of Breakfast Restaurants in Kennebunkport

While Kennebunkport may be a small town, this map of all breakfast locations mentioned in this article will keep you on track for the best breakfast around:

Dock Square Coffee House

Anchored to the land only by the front portion of the building, the majority of the Dock Square Coffee House hovers on pilings over an inlet of the Kennebunk River, which separates Kennebunk’s Lower Village from Kennebunkport’s Dock Square.

This warm, welcoming little café features indoor seating and a light menu of hot drinks and breakfast items, all sourced from local businesses, like Coffee by Design, Bread and Roses Bakery, and The Purple Whisk.

Their offerings change daily depending on what is available, but you’ll typically find delicious, made-from-scratch items like breakfast sandwiches, fresh-squeezed juice, 100% natural smoothies, avocado toast, and homemade baked goods.

There is also a curated collection of unique and quirky gift items to peruse—perfect for a memento of your trip.

Fiafia

For a lighter, gentler breakfast, head across Dock Square and up the hill to Fiafia. Made with the freshest possible, all-natural ingredients, Fiafia’s smoothies, bowls, and toasts are the ideal way to start off your busy day without loading down your belly with heavy, greasy fare.

Sit outside on one of the adorable bistro tables to enjoy your repast if the weather is nice.

For the perfect morning culinary lineup, I suggest getting the Rooibos Red (Rooibos Red espresso, raw agave, oat milk, and cinnamon) as your hot beverage, and ordering the Butterfly smoothie bowl: Butterfly pea flower, pitaya, banana, mango, and pineapple blended with coconut milk, topped with raspberries, kiwi, coconut, banana, sunflower seeds, bee pollen, and a honey drizzle.

Cape Porpoise Kitchen

This delightfully unassuming little corner establishment is a combination specialty food and wine market, gourmet deli, and bistro.

You can order breakfast or lunch to enjoy at one of their cozy indoor café tables; Cape Porpoise also offers full, prepared dinners for take-out—and you can order bespoke gift baskets, thoughtfully curated from their high-end gourmet cheeses, wines, and other culinary delights.

CPK offers fresh-brewed coffee from Portland’s Coffee by Design, and breakfast items include a signature sandwich, quiche du jour, baked-daily muffins, scones, coffee cake, croissants, and bagels (oh, and Friday is house-baked donut day!).

When available, I love to order the smoked salmon with capers, red onion, and cream cheese on a bagel.

The Nonantum Resort

This popular seasonal resort features a massive hot breakfast buffet for guests and the public—and the views of the Kennebunk River and well-tended grounds are just as delightful as the fare.

Options change daily, but expect elevated hot items like Benedicts, waffles, quiche, breakfast meats, and cooked-to-order omelets.

The Nonantum’s buffet also provides fresh fruit, breads, oatmeal, various dry cereals, as well as decadent pastries and other freshly-baked breakfast treats—made by the in-house pastry chef.

Both vegan and gluten-free options are also available—and you can even order a morning cocktail.

The Colony Hotel

Another seasonal establishment, the grand old Colony presides over the mouth of the Kennebunk River and the Atlantic Ocean like a well-heeled matron.

The in-house restaurants are open to the public, and there is a full, hot breakfast buffet worthy of kings served in the Porch and Grand Dining Room.

There is a rotating daily menu of hot egg dishes, meat options, various freshly-baked goodies, and griddle cakes; you’ll also have your selection of fruit, cereals, yogurt, breads, and oatmeal.

If the weather complies, take your feast out to the pool deck and be treated to the best view in the Kennebunks.

Old Salt’s Pantry

This seasonal, don’t-blink-or-you’ll-miss-it little market and deli is snugged tightly between two other shops right in the heart of Dock Square.

Perfect for a meal to go, Old Salt’s Pantry makes breakfast sandwiches to order; they also make a killer lobster roll, so if you need to pack a lunch for later, kill two birds with one stone and order one of those, too.

There’s also hot coffee and baked-daily muffins to round out your morning meal.

Satellite Doughnutsd

If you have a breakfast sweet tooth, then I’m about to rock your world—this coming from someone whose favorite food group is cake…and what is a donut if not a forkless version of cake?

Satellite makes teeny, tiny, adorable donuts fresh daily—and something about eating such small versions of these delights makes you feel somewhat less guilty about eating three (or five) of them.

No matter which flavor you try, chances are that, like a potato chip, you won’t be able to stop after just one.

The Cereal & Milk donut is one of my favorites…and the Chocolate Raspberry—complete with a fresh raspberry nestled in the chocolate ganache topping—is a close second.

Kennebunkport also has a couple of Sunday brunches available, if you’re looking for something a little special to start your day and wrap up your weekend with a bit of pizazz.

Located on the Kennebunk River, diagonally across the street from the Colony Hotel, Stripers features a curated brunch menu—my favorite item is the Shakshuka: three eggs poached in Israeli tomato sauce with zucchini, peppers, feta, and cilantro, served with toasted baguette…and their Smoked Bloody Maria with added shrimp is the pinnacle of breakfast joy.

Located just over the bridge into Dock Square, the seasonal Hurricane restaurant also offers an elevated brunch menu rather than a buffet.

If you’re like me and prefer to have a bit of sweet and savory with your dining-out breakfast experience—and if you have a willing partner—try this: Order the Maine Lobster Benedict (two poached eggs on an English muffin with country ham, hollandaise, and fresh-picked lobster) and the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes (served with fresh Maine blueberries, maple syrup, and grilled sausage) and do a splitsy.
