some delicious Kittery crêpes
As the oldest town in the state of Maine, Kittery has slowly been adding pockets of vibrant, youthful commerce here and there, in areas both expected and surprising.

Kittery Foreside—including Wallingford Square—as well as Pepperrell Cove, are the antithesis to the popular stretch of outlet shopping and fast food stops along Route One.

In other words, there is something for everyone in Kittery—and that includes breakfast options. Whether you’re looking for fast food, grab-and-go, or a sit-down morning meal with table service, Kittery has it all.

Map of Kittery Breakfast Spots

Looking for the best breakfasts in Kittery? This map of all the spots we go over in this article will act as your guide:

Sunrise Grill

For over thirty years, the Sunset Grill has been serving made-to-order breakfast and lunch at their unassuming little café, just off of the Kittery traffic circle.

Just one mile from the outlets, having breakfast here is a great way to power up before a long day of retail therapy; their menus are loaded with all manner of combination plates, egg options, pancakes, waffles, and baked goods.

Affordable, fresh fare, friendly service, and a comfortable dining space all make the Sunset Grill one of my favorite breakfast stops in Kittery. And for a meal that will stick to your ribs for that marathon shopping trip, get the flat iron steak and eggs.

Bagel Caboose

Also located just off of the traffic circle, this authentic train caboose-turned-seasonal-diner is another perfect spot for breakfast before shopping…or before anything, for that matter.

The Bagel Caboose offers both indoor and outdoor seating (kids will love the toy train circling the ceiling of the dining room) and serves locally-roasted coffee to go with their homemade spreads, fresh bagels, and breakfast sandwiches.

For the latter, you can choose to either build your own creation, or order one of the mouthwatering Signature Sandwiches on offer, all served on either a buttered bagel, English muffin, or croissant. And because I have steak on the brain right now, I’ll recommend the Iron Horse: Egg, shaved steak, cheddar, and A1 Steak Sauce. Zesty!

Kasha’s Kitchen

Serving breakfast and lunch all day (from 7-3), Kasha’s Kitchen is just north of all of the outlets on Route One—which makes it another solid stop-off to stave off those shopping hangries.

The menu is loaded with options, including egg sandwiches, burritos, Benedicts, and omelets—and of course, pancakes and waffles.

And while I’m a sucker for a great Irish Benny—which they have—I’d be remiss not to recommend Kasha’s Monte Cristo Sandwich, served on French toast with two fried eggs, ham, Swiss cheese, and maple syrup.

Lil’s Café

Tucked away in the quaint Wallingford Square area, Lil’s features house-made pastry and bread (their crullers are the stuff dreams are made of), a modest breakfast menu, and a hearty list of coffees and teas on offer. Named after Lilian Mangos, the cashier at nearby Bob’s Clam Hut for over two decades, this cozy little café is the perfect spot to meet up with a friend over a hot drink and a slice of quiche or a fresh-baked scone—and they even have doggie crullers.

My favorite item here is the Chorizo Wrap: Chorizo, scrambled eggs, greens, and sweet potato. Oh, and a cruller, of course.

Lovebirds Donuts

Whether you’re a fan of cake donuts or slow-raised yeast donuts (and even if you have no idea which is which), chances are you’re going to love anything you try at Lovebirds.

The donuts are all made from scratch in small, daily batches, and their coffee is organic and fair trade—so there’s a lot to love here. The menu changes monthly at Lovebirds to make the most of available seasonal ingredients, but most of the classic flavors are on offer year-round—and all of the donuts are vegan.

Donut categories include Swanky (experimental), Signature (dipped, drizzled, and/or filled), Classics (traditional favorites), and Gluten-Free…and they also offer two Great Big Donuts, which serve 8. Dream come true, man.

Toast Sandwich Shop

If you’re a fan of using bread as a vehicle from which to ingest your favorite morning breakfast ingredients of choice, then this could be your new go-to breakfast spot.

Currently open on weekends only, I wouldn’t be surprised if this bright, airy shop expands their hours soon to meet demand—because, with both sweet and savory toasts available, everyone’s palate needs are met with these delicious toast creations.

And because I like a little of both, I’d get The A Town (peanut butter, fresh berry smash, pepitas, and black sesame seeds) as well as The Classic (avocado, EVOO, hemp hearts, black sesame seeds, microgreens, and sea salt).

Beach Pea Baking Company

For fresh-baked morning magic (read: melt-in-your-mouth croissants, scones, and muffins) as well as quick breads, egg wraps, coffee cake, and breakfast bars, stop into Beach Pea.

This sweet (no pun intended) little café serves up breakfast joy with a smile—and the bonus is that you can also pick up dessert while you’re there, for after dinner…although who’s to know if one cupcake goes missing?

Auto Drip

A drive-thru-only convenience and grocery store that also happens to have incredible breakfast sandos? Why aren’t there one of these Auto Drips on every street corner, I ask you?

Six different made-to-order breakfast sandwiches—the price of which includes a cup of coffee—all for less than you’d pay for just the cup of coffee at a high-end café.

Auto Drip also has a divine selection of baked goods, including their homemade cheddar biscuits—one of which is the vehicle for their Southernmost Point sandwich (sausage, egg, and cheese).

And if you’re really in a hurry, they suggest calling in ahead with your order—it’ll be ready for you when you pull up.

Maine Squeeze

For those of you that don’t necessarily need a hearty morning meal to sink your teeth into, you can always try drinking your breakfast. With 14 signature, all-natural smoothies—including 7 specialty concoctions—you’re sure to find a belly-filling, palate-pleasing flavor combination.

Maine Squeeze also offers fresh-squeezed juices and a heart-healthy acai bowl: Blended acai/guarana, banana and almond milk, topped with granola, peanut butter, coconut, banana, and raw cacao nibs.

Location: 7 Wallingford Square #113, Kittery, ME 03904

Of course, Kittery also has its share of fast-food breakfast options, like Starbucks, Aroma Joe’s, and Dunkin’, to name a few.

But if you’re in a rush and you just can’t bring yourself to bow down to the franchise empires, why not give the Kittery Food Mart a try? Yes, it’s a convenience store.

Yes, it has “Mart” in its name. But their fresh, made-just-for-you breakfast sandwiches and wraps are nothing to tip your nose up at. And, if you’re looking for late morning (they don’t open until 11:00) breakfast in an unexpected spot, the delicious omelets at the Town Pizza Restaurant will hold you over until dinner.
