thin crust pizza from Brunswick, Maine
Home of the first college in the state—Bowdoin College, established in 1794—it only stands to reason that Brunswick would feature a hearty representation of the college student’s favorite staple: pizza.

With its ever-expanding theater, arts, and entertainment offerings, Brunswick’s dining scene has kept pace with the times, evolving and growing to meet the demand of its diverse residential and seasonal customer base.

The pizza establishments are no exception, and you can find everything from a classic-but-basic cheese pizza, right on up to a bounty of signature creative pies—and some that may seem downright bizarre.

Map of Brunswick Pizza Joints

Here is a map of all the pizza places mentioned in this post:

Scarlet Begonias

Stepping into this little café-style bistro will feel like coming home. The hearty menu is full of homemade deliciousness—appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pasta, grill items…and of course, pizza.

Hand-stretched dough baked on a pizza stone ensures even cooking, and the combinations of fresh toppings used to create their nine signature pies are delightfully simple—and simply delightful.

Their Simon Says pizza, however, takes things up a notch or two, from simple to sinfully sensational: Pepperoni, sausage, chicken, hot cherry peppers, mushrooms, corn, marinara, and herbed cheese blend.

Joshua’s

Complete with beer logo mirrors, exposed timbers, sports memorabilia, and a fire in the hearth, Joshua’s is a true tavern. With a large, pub-style menu featuring everything from chowder and chicken fingers to burgers and Black Angus steak, there’s little chance you won’t find what you’re craving—especially if it’s pizza.

Their 12” pies are baked in stone ovens, and you can choose from one of their ten specialty pizzas, or build your own. If you’re feeling adventurous, I recommend the un-sauced Joshua’s Tavern Original pie: Prosciutto, tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, cheese blend, olive oil, and oregano.

Location: 123 Maine St, Brunswick, ME 04011

Antigoni’s Pizza

Since opening in 2003, Antigoni’s has expanded to Lewiston and Augusta—but their growth hasn’t changed their popularity here in Brunswick.

Offering booths and high-top seating for their order-and-pickup counter-style dining, Antigoni’s is a casual, comfortable spot with a vast menu of pizza options, including both signature pies and build-your-own. A

nd, honestly—ask me on any given day what my favorite is, and I’ll certainly answer differently. Today? I’m feeling the love for the Tri-Colori pie: Garlic sauce, spinach, roasted red peppers, garlic, and goat cheese. Bring on the breath mints!

Pat’s Pizza

Having 15 successful locations in Maine is nothing to sneeze at; Pat’s Pizza has been pleasing the palates of Maine pizza fanatics since 1931, and boy, do they know their stuff.

Also offering soups, salads, dinners, and hot/cold subs, the pizza menu at Pat’s is borderline overwhelming to someone who tends to like everything they see (ahem…me).

With all manner of crust options (single or double white or whole wheat dough, low carb, gluten-free zucchini or cauliflower), as well as build-your-own pie or thin crust/classic signature pizzas, chances are it’ll take you a while to decide on what to order.

To save you the struggle, I suggest the Big Pat: Double dough, Thousand Island Dressing, pickles, onion, hamburger, and cheese blend.

Portland Pie Company

Another Maine chain-style establishment, Portland Pie is a fixture for many a Mainer—and many a seasonal visitor, as well. Known for their creative crust options (thin or classic basil, beer, garlic, or wheat) and mouthwatering signature pie creations, Portland Pie has perfected the art of all things pizza.

The menu is expansive—with much more than pizza on offer—and includes a host of signature pizzas (most named after locations in Maine) and a build-your-own section.

Their Bradbury Mountain pie is my favorite go-to: Olive oil and garlic, Portobello, cremini, and button mushrooms, topped with arugula, goat cheese, and balsamic reduction.

OTTO

Yet another pizza franchise, this spot is one of OTTO’s most recently-opened locations, much to the joy of their loyal Maine followers.

With very little more than pizza available on their menu, OTTO focuses all of their creative culinary energy on the pies.

They also donate $1 of every special pizza sold to local programs striving to end child hunger in the area—one more reason to order from OTTO. Give the Pulled Pork and Mango pie a try—sure, it sounds…questionable. But trust me when I say it’s a hands-down taste sensation.

Warming’s Market

This local convenience store offers delicious, classic, take-out pizza…the perfect solution to those “there’s nothing in the fridge” dinner nights.

In addition to the calzones, salads, sandwiches, and wraps on offer, their made-to-order pies are one-size only and could be considered personal pizzas for those with larger appetites (me, again).

Give the White Pizza with Olive Oil and Garlic a try—as long as you won’t be in close quarters with anyone soon. Actually, even if you are…go for it. It’s totally worth it!

Location: 294 Maine St, Brunswick, ME 04011

Tess’ Market

Another take-out option, Tess’ has been serving up their homemade pies for over 50 years. This family-run establishment offers a long list of topping options, and their affordable prices and cheerful smiles have made them hugely popular with tourists, students, and locals alike.

The menu offers hot and cold sandwiches as well, and a few salad options, in addition to the long list of pizzas. Try the Tess Special Trifecta: Pepperoni, mushrooms, and feta cheese. I know—sounds a bit disjointed…but it’s distinctly delicious.

Zach’s Country Store

Yet another pizza joint in disguise, Zach’s Country Store has everything you need for game night, date night, or a busy weeknight.

Just stop in for a fresh, homemade pizza or three, a bottle of wine, or a 6-pack of beer, and you’re good to go. No bells and whistles or signature pie options here—just classic, basic pizza options, available in 12” or 16”, hot and ready to go when you need it.

Location: 641 Gurnet Rd, Brunswick, ME 04011

Sam’s Italian Foods

Sam’s has seven other Maine locations and has been making their scrumptious Italian fare for their customers since 1939. And while many folks will swear that Sam’s Italian sandwiches are the restaurant’s signature dish, just as many will vow that the pizza is the best thing on the menu here.

And because I like the biggest bang for my buck, I recommend Sam’s Loaded pie—the name says it all.

Flight Deck Brewing

Tucked away in Brunswick Landing (the former Brunswick Naval Air Station), Flight Deck offers a short list of wood-fired pizzas made with The Good Crust from Skowhegan.

Many of their ingredients are locally sourced, and the menu revolves around what is seasonally available. For a creative pizza experience, order the Tailgunner: Red sauce, mozzarella, bacon, broccoli, and red onions finished with lemon olive oil.

Location: 11 Atlantic Ave, Brunswick, ME 04011

As I reach the outer limits of my review allowance, I find I must add a few more mentions. For spectacular gluten-free pizza options, check out The Great Impasta.

And, if you’re one of those people that can only enjoy one familiar, specific kind of pizza—no straying out of the proverbial pizza box, you might say—then see if either Domino’s or Amato’s floats your boat.
