While not quite as advanced in the up-and-coming revitalization department as its sassy sister city, Biddeford, Saco has been steadily making her way forward in an ongoing urban renewal process.
This has been evidenced by the slow-but-steady number of new businesses opening up in recent years along Main Street and further along Route One, offering visitors and locals alike more and more shopping and dining options.
I’ve been especially gratified to see more breakfast options popping up—because, as you must know by now, it is my favorite dining-out meal.
Map of Saco Breakfast Spots
These Saco breakfast spots are sure to satisfy your cravings:
Cia Café
This special little eatery prides itself in “promoting local bakers, makers, and artists” for both this location and the one in South Portland.
Serving breakfast all day from 7-2, the folks at Cia make all of their sandwiches to order on homemade English muffins, croissants, bagels, or biscuits, making the final product all the more delicious.
The Saco Sandwich is my fave: Two fried eggs, bacon, tomato, guacamole, and cheddar.
And while you’re enjoying your morning repast, why not stroll around the shop and pick up one or two handcrafted items to have tucked away as an emergency hostess or housewarming gift?
Location: 9 Beach St, Saco, ME 04072

Golden Rooster
The Golden Rooster is full of surprises; from the outside, you’d perhaps expect an outdated, dim dining room—but the space is bright, spacious, and comfortable.
With both counter and table seating as well as colorful, quirky décor, The Golden Rooster is a solid option for a full-on, table-service breakfast experience.
There are plenty of options on the morning menu, including egg combination platters, Benedicts, blintzes, crepes, pancakes, omelets, and sandwiches—so there’s no way anyone’s leaving the table hungry.
I suggest ordering a Lobster Omelet (lobster and cheddar, topped with hollandaise) with a couple of chocolate chip crepes on the side.
Location: 236 Main St, Saco, ME 04072

Fernleaf Bakery & Coffee House
With limited indoor seating, Fernleaf is better suited for a take-out breakfast. Predominantly and foremost an amazing bakery, Fernleaf also has several breakfast sandos on offer—and of course, plenty of freshly baked magic just waiting to be placed alongside your savory item of choice.
Might I recommend the egg, sausage, and cheddar sandwich, along with a still-warm cranberry orange scone, dripping with melted butter? You’re welcome.

Lucky Loggers Restaurant
Lucky Loggers has been providing abundant servings of delicious fare at affordable prices since 1980.
Built on the former drying yard for the Deering Lumber Company sawmill, all of the décor and artwork at this family-style restaurant reflect that connection; even the lumber used for the dining room walls came from Deering’s private storehouse.
The menu here is full of variety, perfect for folks like me that require a bit of sweet with savory when dining out in the morning…like the Waffle Breakfast, for instance: One Belgian waffle, one egg, and either two slices of bacon or two sausages.
Perfect—especially with a house Bloody Mary.
Location: 4 Scamman St Suite # 17, Saco, ME 04072

Auto Mile Diner
The Auto Mile is pretty much as old-school-diner-y as it gets without actually being a train dining car.
Breakfast is served all day, every day, and with a big, honkin’ specials board supplementing the regular menu, you may find yourself gleefully overwhelmed with options.
One of the frequent fliers on the specials rotation is the Pizza Omelet…which just has to be tasted to be believed.
And make sure someone else at your table orders the Strawberries and Cream crepes so that you can steal a few bites.
Location: 819 Portland Rd, Saco, ME 04072

The New Moon Café
Another great all-day breakfast option in downtown Saco, The New Moon’s menu is chock-full of morning deliciousness.
Sandwiches, egg combination platters, burritos, omelets, pancakes, and French toast are just a few of the options you’ll find here; the dining room is fun and quirky, the service is fast and friendly, and your wallet will be happy.
The Portobello and Swiss omelet is a taste sensation—especially when paired with the House Cinnamon Pancakes.
Location: 17 Pepperell Square, Saco, ME 04072

The Deli & Company
Just south of the Main Street hustle and bustle in one of the revitalized mills, The Deli & Co. features both indoor and outdoor seating for their breakfast and lunch fare.
Offering a slew of morning sandwiches on a variety of delicious starch vehicles, this spot uses only free-range eggs and makes all of their own sausage and English muffins.
You can even opt for Keto, gluten-free, or put your favorite sandwich contents into a bowl, instead—and if you’ve got company to feed, try a breakfast flatbread.
Me? I order Deli & Company’s signature Breakfast Burrito every time: Black Forest ham, house-made salsa, 3 eggs, and cheddar.
Location: 110 Main St #1204, Saco, ME 04072

Sugar Mama’s Café & Juice Bar
“Healthy, convenient fast-food alternatives…filled with vitamins beneficial to the body.”
That’s what Sugar Mama’s is all about. This cheerful bistro features counter service and a bright, industrial-rustic dining area, and the menu is abundant with health-conscious options like smoothies, smoothie bowls, toasts, and naan flatbreads.
The bakery counter is always full of fresh deliciousness—including gluten-free, vegan, and dairy-free options—and Wicked Joe coffees are also on offer.
I’m particularly enamored with the Signature Toast Flight (a sampling of 4): Everything Avocado, Blueberry Hill, Caprese, and Beets & Goat Cheese.
Location: 209 Main St, Saco, ME 04072

Loxsmith Bagel Company
Loxsmith is also housed in a former textile mill, just up the hill from Deli & Company.
And if your idea of the perfect breakfast is coffee along with a meal that doesn’t involve utensils, Loxsmith could be your next favorite morning haunt.
It’s all about the bagels here—made fresh daily and served up with your favorite topping or as a vehicle for a mouthwatering array of made-to-order sandwiches (also known as Loxsmith’s Eggcellent Creations).
If I absolutely had to choose one, it’d probably be the Californian: A fried egg on a multigrain bagel with spinach and avocado.
Location: 120 Main St, Saco, ME 04072
Website: Loxsmith Bagel Company
And of course, much like any community, there are plenty of well-known franchise establishments scattered throughout the city—such as IHOP, Starbucks, Dunkin’, McDonald’s, and Aroma Joe’s—ready and waiting for those of you that prefer to stay within familiar territory when it comes to breakfast in Saco.
