Scarborough oatmeal with Maine blueberries
Whether you’re in town for a seaside, weeklong respite, or perhaps just passing through the town of Scarborough, it won’t take long to realize this town is special.

Only seven miles south of Portland, this coastal resort area has much to offer residents and visitors alike; with several beautiful beaches and over a dozen trails, parks, and recreation areas, there are plenty of options for the outdoor enthusiast.

There are also many dining choices in Scarborough—and that includes breakfast spots.

Here are all the breakfast spots in Scarborough we mentioned, so you can easily plan out your next meal:

Blast from the Past Too Diner

If you’re a sucker for good old diner fare like me, then this is the place for you.

This family-friendly, 50s-style eatery—complete with a jukebox—offers huge portions of delicious, made-to-order comfort food, with take-out, indoor, and outdoor (seasonal) dining available.

The enormous breakfast menu (which includes mimosas and Bloody Marys, I might add) features Benedicts, crepes, pancakes/waffles/French toast, omelets, platters…too much to list here.

Me? I love me a sweet and savory breakfast, so I’d go for the Irish Benedict with a Cinnamon Roll pancake on the side.

St. Joe’s Café

Serving up Portland’s own Seacoast Coffee, St. Joe’s Café declares itself as “your friend with Bennies.”

Don’t be fooled, though—they’re not talking about Eggs Benedict, here. It’s in reference to one of their specialties—beignets.

Served munchkin-style, you can get these mouth-watering treats with your choice of chocolate, blueberry, maple-cinnamon, or raspberry sauce.

St. Joe’s also offers more traditional breakfast options like egg sandwiches on biscuits, croissants, or English muffins. There are also egg white options—and even “no-egg” sandwich offerings.

I recommend ordering The Mushroom egg biscuit (sautéed mushrooms, egg, caramelized onions, and garlic herb cream cheese) alongside an order of 4 Bennies with maple-cinnamon sauce.

Scarborough Grounds

Looking like a rehabbed, old-time general store on the outside and someone’s comfy living room on the inside, Scarborough Grounds exudes warmth and comfort.

There is a short-but-sweet list of breakfast sandwiches on offer, with bagels, ciabatta, croissants, English muffins, toast, wraps, or gluten-free bread as starch vehicle options for your breakfasty deliciousness to snuggle into.

If you’re looking for something to really stick to your ribs for a while, try the Ranchero Burrito: Egg, cheese, plant-based chorizo, avocado, roasted corn, black beans, and green chili sauce.

The Maine Bagel

Currently offering drive-through service only, The Maine Bagel makes their 12 flavors of bagels and cream cheese daily, in-house.

There are nine breakfast sandwiches on offer, made fresh for you when you call or place your order at the window.

And if you have a sweet morning tooth (or like me, a sweet-and-savory tooth), The Maine Bagel also bakes muffins and cinnamon rolls every morning.

So, what do you say? How about a Corned Beef Egg & Cheese Everything bagel sandwich with a blueberry muffin to go with it?

The Holy Donut

The holy grail for Maine donut lovers, The Holy Donut makes their melt-in-your-mouth magic delights every morning—and get this: the donuts are made with Maine potatoes.

If you are a real donut connoisseur, the menu will undoubtedly bring a tear of joy to your eye—justifiably so.

With creative, drool-worthy options like Maple Bacon, Sweet Potato Ginger Glazed, and Holy Cannoli Triple Berry Glazed, it’s next to impossible to leave this place with only one donut.

There are also six gluten-free options, as well as Bacon-Cheddar donut holes and a fried, house-made hash brown patty on offer.

Great East Butcher Company

If you’re looking for a made-to-order breakfast sandwich on the go, the Great East Butcher Company has five delicious options on their menu—including my favorite, the three-napkin, belly-busting Breakfast Burger: A house burger, runny egg, mayo, spring greens, tomato, onion, and American cheese on a brioche bun.

All of the local, sustainable sandwich meats come from Great East’s butcher shop, sliced fresh daily.

Honeycomb Café

Serving ice cream as well as fair-trade coffee and tea, this sweet seasonal café also offers a rotating menu of delicious breakfast sandwiches, toasts, and bagels.

Honeycomb’s baked goods—English muffins, Whoopie pies, donuts, and sandwich biscuits, just to name a few—are all made in-house daily, and they even make their own Pop-Tarts.

Shade

Located at the Higgins Beach Inn, this casual, seasonal bistro is open to the public and features both indoor seating as well as a comfortable, covered dining patio.

Their petite breakfast menu offers a little bit of everything; the options of elevated morning fare include my top pick, an Open-Faced Bagel & Lox sandwich: Toasted bagel, cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato, red onion, capers, and dill.

Sirloin’s Restaurant & Bar

Breakfast? At a place named Sirloin’s? Yup. And not only does Sirloin’s have breakfast, but there are also eight morning cocktails to accompany your morning repast…need I say more?

How about I mention the fact that, in addition to six other delectable breakfast options, Sirloin’s offers an out-of-this-world morning Monte Cristo sandwich?

Picture this: Deep-fried turkey, Virginia ham, egg, and Swiss cheese, served with strawberry jam, and an ice-cold Screwdriver alongside it.

8 Corners Market

This local take-out favorite has only four items on their breakfast menu—but that’s all they need.

Let’s start with the 16” breakfast pizza—because why wouldn’t we? I mean, really—egg, cheese, and up to three toppings of your choice?

Whoever had the brilliant idea to combine pizza and breakfast deserves a spot in the culinary hall of fame (is that a thing?), in my opinion.

And 8 Corners’ Breakfast Sandwich, Omelet, and Omelet Wrap are all equally fantastic, IMHO.

Mac’s Deli

Offering counter service with a few indoor bistro tables, Mac’s is predominantly a take-out establishment. Featuring a short list of made-to-order breakfast sandwiches, this is the perfect spot for a grab-and-go, hot morning meal.

If you’re really hungry, I suggest the Steak & Egg sandwich: Roast beef, house-made Boursin spread, two eggs, grilled red onion, cheddar, tomato, and lettuce on a bulkie roll.

And since Mac’s also has an abundant list of lunchtime sandwiches and salads, why not grab breakfast and lunch at the same time?

Higgins Beach Market

This seasonal jack-of-all-trades is, at first glance, not much more than a glorified roadside stand.

But their breakfast (and lunch) offerings are a far cry from what you’d expect from such a diminutive establishment: Made-to-order breakfast sandwiches, locally-procured baked goods (from Rover Bagel and Little Spruce Bakery), and even gluten-free options.

Swing by first thing on a beautiful summer morning, order a Green Morning sandwich (fried egg, smoked cheddar and American cheese, bacon, arugula, and herbed mayonnaise), and head off to the beach to enjoy every bite.
