Self-dubbed “the prettiest village in Maine,” Wiscasset certainly lives up to its moniker. Postcard-perfect, this quintessential, small New England town fairly oozes with coastal charm and historic character.
Many folks may recognize Wiscasset if only because of its major claim to fame; Red’s Eats, the much-accoladed seafood shack, is known to snarl Route One traffic with tourists inadvertently stepping off the sidewalk as they jockey for position in the long line to order one of Red’s massive lobster rolls.
But Wiscasset also has plenty of other culinary options—especially if you’d rather eat most of your calories first thing in the morning—and there are a few other fantastic options in the surrounding communities, as well.

The Cracked Egg
This family-style, laid-back restaurant is under new ownership—but folks can still count on the always-reliable breakfast and lunch fare to remain just as delicious as before. Why mess with a good thing? Affordable, plentiful, and fantastic—three apt words to describe the menu at The Cracked Egg.
You’ll find all the usual suspects, like egg plates, omelets, pancakes, Belgian Waffles, French toast, breakfast sandwiches, and belly-busting combination platters, like my top choice, Liam the Lumberjack: Two eggs any style, two slices of bacon, and two sausages, with your choice of pancakes or French toast (if you’ve read my articles before, then you know I’m a big fan of sweet AND savory when I go out for breakfast).

Treats
If you are one of those folks that is fine with breakfast being a sweet-only experience (with coffee, of course), then Treats is the place for you. All of the food here is made in-house from scratch (these dedicated folks show up at 2 a.m. to begin their day), with lots of love and patience.
Think whipped-cream-topped cherry-vanilla mascarpone custard bronuts (a mashup of a brownie and a donut—WHAAAAAT), enormous cinnamon rolls dripping with icing, crumb-topped blackberry muffins, yogurt parfaits with fresh fruit and house-made granola, homemade quiche, and made-to-order breakfast sandwiches on melt-in-your-mouth, buttery croissants.

Marketplace Café
This no-frills, diner-style eatery offers big, affordable portions of yummy breakfast fare. The menu is just as utilitarian as the restaurant itself—and I say that purely as a compliment.
You’ll find everything you need here to tick all the necessary boxes for a delicious morning repast: Three-egg omelets with toast, egg combination plates, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, French toast, Belgian waffles, and the house Marketplace Platter, which includes two eggs, two pancakes or slices of French toast, two slices of bacon, and two sausages. Bring on the twos!

Jodie’s Café & Bakery
Featuring a delightful assortment of breakfast options, Jodie’s is bright, spacious, and cheerful. Serving up fantastic fare with a southern flair, you’ll find tummy-tempting options like Biscuits and Sausage Gravy, served with two eggs and home fries, or the George Burrito, filled with chorizo, scrambled eggs, sautéed peppers and onions, pepper jack cheese, and salsa.
I’d certainly happily partake of either option, but I’d need someone else to order the Baked French Toast (custard-soaked homemade bread served with Maine blueberries and cream cheese) and go halfsies with me.

Birches Coffee Bar & Market
With a list of coffees and other hot drinks as big as the food menu, Birches is most definitely java-centric. But don’t let that deter you, because the semi-diminutive list of delicious morning munchies is not to be missed.
There are three mouth-watering breakfast sandwich options (I recommend the Prosciutto & Parm, with egg, parmesan cheese, spinach, tomato, and smoked prosciutto on a fresh bagel or biscuit), along with six toast or bagel choices (the Avocado Toast with Tomato is a delight). And, of course, I suggest you also choose something sweet from the daily rotation of fresh baked goods.

Mammy’s Bakery
Yes, Mammy’s is primarily an authentic Italian bakery…but you can get plenty of scrumptious, homemade breakfast options here, too. Made-to-order egg sandwiches on still-warm, fresh-baked biscuits, spinach and artichoke croissants, decadent pastries and muffins (even gluten-free options), breakfast pizza, and much more await your morning appetite.

Woodsong Market
Located in Edgecomb, just two minutes from Wiscasset’s bustling Main Street, the Woodsong Market is a great option for those mornings when you don’t have time for a sit-down breakfast, or want to take your morning meal to your favorite sunrise-watching spot to enjoy.
Featuring a menu of create-your-own, made-to-order breakfast sandwiches, a variety of New York-style bagels, and fresh-made cinnamon buns, muffins, scones, and turnovers, you can get your sweet AND savory fix at Woodsong.

S. Fernald’s Country Store
With limited indoor dining available, this classic country store in nearby Damariscotta has been doing a brisk take-out breakfast business alongside their extensive convenience items since 1990. Serving coffee (roasted locally) and breakfast all day, the hardworking, friendly folks at Fernald’s chat up the locals as they wait for their fare…like a stack of blueberry pancakes with a couple of hash brown on the side, for example. The lunch menu is nothing to turn your nose up at, either.

Barn Door Baking Company
Also in Damariscotta, the Barn Door Baking Company currently offers a perfectly serviceable breakfast menu at this location, which adjoins Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop; plenty of coffees, teas, fresh baked goods, savory hand pies, and breakfast sandwiches are all on offer.
But these folks don’t want to leave well enough alone—and are shooting for bigger and better things in the coming months. Just a few blocks away, you’ll also have Barn Door Breakfast and Lunch to choose from, with a more extensive menu of fare options.

Mae’s Café & Bakery
Offering breakfast, lunch, and brunch less than 20 minutes from the center of Wiscasset, Mae’s serves their breakfast menu all day.
And oh, what a menu it is! Benedicts, omelets, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, French toast, and smoothies are all here…but I always go right to the House Specialties section, where I order the Morse’s Mountain: Two eggs cooked to your liking, a sausage patty, two slices of bacon, two pancakes, and home fries.
