ogunquit fish market

Maine is famous for its seafood, and our lobster is second to none.

Those of us who live here can take great fish and seafood for granted, but to those visiting Vacationland – or those who recently made the excellent decision to move here – discovering the many oceanic dishes available in Maine is a delightful culinary journey.

The hardest part of that journey is often finding the best place to buy fresh fish and seafood. That is especially true for areas like Ogunquit, which is a popular destination for tourists from inside and outside of Maine.

There is great fresh seafood to be found in and near Ogunquit – if you know where to look. To help you find luscious lobster and succulent shellfish, here are our picks for the best fresh seafood markets near Ogunquit:

Just walk up and place an order, and in around 15 minutes your delicious lobsters and/or clams are ready. You can have them pack to take with you, or eat at the picnic tables outside if the weather is permitting.

Moving outside the town borders of Ogunquit, Wells Beach Lobster Pound is located only four miles up the coast in the town of Wells. The family behind this terrific seafood market has been in the business since 1956, so they know a thing or two about Maine lobster. Several generations are involved in bringing you the freshest seafood around.

The Wells Beach Lobster Pound is a seasonal business, serving up fresh lobsters and steamers to the summer crowd. They also carry a nice variety of fresh fish for you to sample, including scallops, swordfish, haddock, and clams.

If you’d like them to do the cooking, try one of their fried seafood baskets, and maybe pair it with a delicious clam chowder or lobster stew. Their outdoor dining area has a nice view of the ocean, completing the Maine coast culinary experience.

For many people a vacation in Maine is a family affair, so it makes sense to look for a family-run business to provide iconic Maine seafood. And located approximately 10 miles south of Ogunquit in the town of York is Off The Boat Lobsters, which does exactly that.

Owner Lindsey Ramsey runs her open-air storefront at Sewall’s Bridge dock, which is her family’s fishing pier located on the York River. Local lobstermen provide the seafood to Off The Boat, meaning you will get only the freshest Atlantic fare. They have mastered the art of cooking lobster in seawater if you want to let them do the hard work, but also provide as many live lobsters as you need if you enjoy doing the cooking yourself.

If you aren’t lucky enough to live in the Pine Tree State never fear – Off The Boat can deliver fresh Maine lobsters directly to your door. They ship overnight across the continental US, so the taste of Maine is never far away.

4. Three Sea’s Fish & Lobster

A quick rule of thumb for seafood markets is if you want the freshest seafood, find one that has their own fishing boats. That is exactly what you get from the Three Sea’s Fish & Lobster in Kennebunkport.

Operated by the Nunans – a 7th generation fishing family, Three Sea’s is located less than 15 miles up the coast from Ogunquit. This market boasts a stellar selection of seafood, including shellfish like lobster, mussels, oysters, and clams, along with fish like Maine haddock and halibut when they are in season.

The Three Sea’s also will ship their lobster, sending them overnight with ice packs in an insulated box. And since they catch the lobsters themselves (from Cape Porpoise), each shipment includes a map of exactly where your lobster were caught! As a parent who homeschooled our kids, the only thing that could beat a fresh Maine seafood meal would be the makings of a lesson on locally sourced food and a family run business.

5. Yodeling Clam Lobster Pound

Owner Brenda Gosch has been delivering fantastic lobster and clams here for nearly 40 years, so she clearly knows a thing or two about Maine seafood. While other establishments work at providing side dishes like corn and coleslaw, Brenda does her best to perfect what you really come to Maine for – the freshest lobsters and clams at a terrific price.

The Yodeling Clam is everything you want in a seafood market, and likely to win a place on your yearly vacation itinerary after your first visit.
