everything pizza at a restaurant in augusta maine America’s easternmost capital, Augusta is also the country’s third least-populated capital city…but that fact doesn’t get in the way of this grand dame’s pride of place, and for good reason.

Perched on the banks of the great Kennebec River, Augusta has plenty to be proud about, including her growing—albeit slowly—dining scene.

If you are lucky enough to include Augusta in your travels and need a hearty meal that covers all the food groups, then what better way to do that than a toppings-laden pizza?

Alrighty, then…now that THAT’S decided, now all you have to do is choose a restaurant…and Augusta has options!

Map Of Augusta Pizza Restaurants

The map below shows the locations of every restaurant mentioned in this post, in case your list of things to do on vacation in Augusta includes a local slice or two:

Antigone’s Pizza

For nearly 20 years, Antigone and Kastro have been making their dough from scratch and perfecting their delicious works of culinary art. Their humble Augusta beginnings have expanded to Brunswick and Lewiston, and folks clamor for their thin-crust pies.

Choose from 24 specialty pizzas, or opt to build your own; I’ll suggest the Chicken Club Pizza (garlic sauce, bacon, tomato, and grilled chicken, topped with shredded lettuce when the pie emerges hot from the oven), but you truly can’t go wrong with any of these amazing creations.

Whipper’s Pizza

Family-owned-and-operated since 1960, Whipper’s is the epitome of a classic pizza joint—in all the best ways. You can opt to eat in, take your pie home, or have it delivered—but the result is the same: hot, delicious, stuff-your-face-until-you-can’t-move pizza.

Their menu is utilitarian and extensive (Whipper’s has far more than pizza), and there are four different pie sizes to choose from: 8”, 10”, 12”, and 16”…although why you’d order a smaller pie is a mystery to me; go big or go home, I always say…and last night’s pizza for tomorrow’s breakfast is a win! And speaking of breakfast…they even have a served-all-day breakfast pizza!

Wander Pizza Company

The folks at Wander are all about the process and product; their pies are humbly crafted from local ingredients and cooked in their giant brick oven. “Simple ingredients combined in adventuresome ways…served up in a relaxed, positive energy environment” is how they put it—and in the spirit of adventure, their menu changes almost daily.

What never changes is that they put their heart and soul into every bit of four-ingredient, hand-thrown dough—and while every morsel they craft is mouthwatering, my favorite has to be either the Beet It (goat cheese, roasted beets, arugula, and balsamic glaze) or the Street Corn (roasted corn, Pico de Gallo, cotija, and cilantro).

Damon’s Pizza and Italians

Another old-style pizza place, Damon’s menu is representative of the establishment itself: Practical and simple.

Since 1950, they’ve been serving the greater Augusta area four sizes (8”, 10”, 12”, or 15”) of their spectacular pies, including seven specialty pizzas, a gluten-free option, and a Chicago-style pie; you can also concoct your own masterpiece, choosing from 16 different topping choices.

I highly recommend their Chicken Bacon Ranch pie, because bacon.

End Zone

End Zone is the place for those of you that really love pizza, a challenge, and free stuff…because if you can rise to their Gridiron Challenge and win, you get the pie for free, a t-shirt, and bragging rights.

What is this challenge, you ask? Finish an entire 30” Gridiron pizza in 90 minutes (two people can try as well, but the time limit gets cut in half) without “visiting the bathroom” for 10 minutes afterward.

Given the deliciousness of the pies on their menu, this may sound easy…but unless you’re supremely confident in your gut’s fortitude, I suggest sticking to the 16” or the 24”.

College Carry-Out

As the name implies, this hugely popular spot is take-out-only (although they do deliver as well); ask anyone familiar with the area for the best pizza in town and inevitably, many will mention College Carry-Out.

Their dough is made fresh daily, and pies come in three sizes: 10”, 12”, and 16”. While there are no specialty pizza options, there are more than enough delicious topping choices on their menu for you to create your own.

Cushnoc Brewing Company

This industrial-chic restaurant/tasting room ticks all the boxes: Craft beer, cool vibe, and spectacular pizza. Their wood-fired specialty or build-your-own pies are the perfect complement to any one of their brews—and I’m seriously torn in my efforts to recommend any one pizza in particular.

So, humor me and allow me to mention two of them: The Crab Rangoon (crab claw meat, cream cheese sauce, scallions, crispy wonton strips, and sweet chili garlic drizzle) or The Diner Closes at 2 pm (potatoes, bacon, cheddar, scallions, smoked ricotta cream sauce, and maple syrup drizzle topped with two eggs) are tied for first—and all the rest are close seconds.

John Sullivan’s The Black and Tan

While not exactly the first place you’d think of for amazing pizza, The Black and Tan is an Irish pub that does just that.

Offering two sizes—12” and 16”—of either 5 specialty pies or the build-your-own option, locals rave about the pizza here; you really can’t go wrong no matter what type you choose to go with your Guinness.

But—you know me—I tend toward the specialties, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t let you know that their Reuben pie will rock your world.

Sam’s Italian Foods

Yes, Sam’s is technically a chain—but it’s a Maine-only chain, which makes a big difference, in my estimation (hey, if it’s in Maine, it’s local).

And since Sam’s has been at it since 1939, they’ve got this whole pizza thing down to a science—including their breakfast pizza.

With a long list of toppings to choose from as well as a few specialty pies on their menu, Sam’s has a faithful following of happy customers, including myself—especially when it comes to their spectacular Sam’s Loaded pizza, just the way I like it: With everything but the kitchen sink piled on top.

Twin’s Country Store

Here’s another establishment you might not expect to find on a “Best pizza in Augusta” list…but trust me when I say that they have absolutely earned their spot here.

Yes, Twin’s is a country store. But they also serve up uber-fresh food, including two sizes (10” and 16”) of made-to-order pizza.

Open for breakfast (yup—they’ve got breakfast pies, too), lunch, and dinner, you can either dine-in or bring your pie home—but either way, be prepared for an overall delightful experience: Friendly faces, affordable prices, and super-yummy pizza.

Location: 2336 N Belfast Ave, Augusta, ME 04330

Website: Twin’s Country Store

And of course, if you are a creature of habit (or just plain picky), Augusta also has plenty of familiar franchise options for pizza, which I’ll quickly mention here.

Amato’s offers fresh, made-to-order pies; Panera Bread is now serving flatbread pizza; Little Caesar’s is a great go-to for lots of tasty pizza without emptying your wallet, and, yes—there’s even a Domino’s.
