pizza oven at a restaurant in bangor maine One of the many things I’ve learned about myself is that despite my claims otherwise, I like ALL kinds of pizza.

Yeah, sure, I may have preferences—but when push comes to shove, if you hand me a slice, I’m going to eat it, no question.

But I’m aware that many folks are quite persnickety about their pies and nothing but their chosen style will do: Thin crust, NY or Chicago style, Sicilian, sweet sauce, no sauce…and on it goes.

But I’m going to do a run-down of all the most popular pizza spots in Bangor for you—so if you are one of those picky pizza people, you’ll know where to go.

Map Of Bangor Pizza Restaurants

The map below shows the locations of every restaurant mentioned in this post:

Angelo’s Pizzeria

Not only does this unassuming, strip-mall pizza parlor make all of their sauces from scratch, but they grill and marinate their chicken and other meats, as well—heck, they even shred their own cheese!

Their menu of deep-dish-style pies includes all the classic toppings—and I strongly suggest you give The Big Mac pie a try (Thousand Island dressing, pizza cheese blend, lettuce, onions, hamburger, and pickles) because it’s nothing short of a taste sensation.

If you’re looking for ambiance, however, I also recommend ordering your pie to go.

Location: 499 Hammond St, Bangor, ME 04401

Dabesta Pizza

I giggle every time I say the name of this place, complete with an exaggerated Italian accent and energetic hand motions: “Its-a Dabest-a pizza!”

Also of the super-casual variety, Dabesta is more of a take-out spot; their lunch-only menu is quite limited, but their house-made sauce and dough are amazing, and Dabesta’s Jumbo Slice Lunch Combo (1/4 of any 17” pizza, chips, and a 24- ounce soda) are hugely popular in town.

Choose from toppings like house-seasoned-and-cooked hamburger and chicken, bacon, pepperoni, sausage, onion, peppers, mushrooms, and olives.

Jason’s NY Style Pizza

A thin, hand-tossed, crispy crust with billowy edges, light on toppings, and sliced big enough to fold; as I understand it, that is New York-style pizza in a nutshell.

At Jason’s, every pie is made to order with hand-stretched, house-made dough—which adds a bit of wait time to your order, but it’s worth it.

All toppings are prepped fresh daily, and sauces are also homemade. Their menu includes specialty pies as well as a build-your-own pizza section; do yourself a favor and order the Taco Pizza: Salsa, cheddar jack cheese, taco-seasoned beef, diced green pepper and onion, lettuce, tomato, all topped with tortilla chips.

Portland Pie Company

Although some pizza purists would roll their eyes at the inclusion of a chain in my list, Portland Pie certainly has its local following—and c’mon, folks—it’s a Maine chain!

You have the option to order one of four dough flavors, and then pick whether you want deep-dish style or thin crust (they also have gluten-free options). And whether you decide on one of their 18 specialty pies (the Prosciutto and Boursin Cheese is to die for) or a build-your-own version, chances are you’ll eat one slice too many—because it’s too good not to.

Portland Pie also features a full-service, dine-in bar, if you like a sports pub vibe—or you can be seated in the family-friendly dining room.

Location: 91 Main St, Bangor, ME 04401

Papa Gambino’s

Papa Gambino’s is strictly takeout and delivery—but that doesn’t stop happy customers from making this spot one of the more popular pizza purveyors in town.

Their menu does not contain the words “specialty pizza” anywhere—but that doesn’t mean you won’t find an expansive list of mouthwatering topping options here.

They also have a section of 5 pies labeled “Sweet Basil Pizza,” one of which is topped with fresh sweet basil, tomatoes, sliced chicken breast, breaded eggplant, and Papa’s signature 3-cheese blend (listen closely: Can you hear my stomach growling?).

Locations: 267 State St, Bangor, ME 04401 and 622 Hammond St, Bangor, ME 04401

Tesoro Italian Restaurant and Pizza

Tesoro offers plenty of Italian deliciousness on their menu other than pizza—but that’s not what I’m here to tell you about.

This no-frills restaurant is a local favorite for their New York-style pizza, and while they offer both traditional toppings as well as some creative combinations, my hands-down go-to is their Hot Honey pizza—sauce, cheese, and pepperoni with a hot honey drizzle. Yes—it may sound pretty basic…but trust me, it’s all in that magical drizzle.

Tri-City Pizza

Another take-out-only spot, this family-owned-and-run operation has been filling the bellies of happy customers for over 50 years with made-from-scratch pies.

Their menu is bare-bones basic but offers more than enough topping options for you to create your own signature pizza to enjoy in the comfort of your own living room—all while boasting of your pizza-topping-choice prowess.

Location: 422 Center St #3869, Bangor, ME 04401

Blaze

With their warm, woodsy vibe and fantastic food and drinks, Blaze is one of the more popular Bangor dining spots—especially for their wood-fired pizzas.

With a handful of signature pies (my vote is always for the Chorizo Manzana—white ricotta base, chorizo, bacon, fire-roasted apples, smoked cheddar, cilantro, and a sriracha aioli drizzle), a build-your-own option, and an enormous craft beer selection, Blaze is the perfect spot to settle in for an evening with friends for delightful nosh and conversation.

Location: 18 Broad St, Bangor, ME 04401

Bangor Sandwich

Strictly a Detroit-style pizza place (crust with a fluffy interior and crispy exterior, topped with cheese, toppings, and THEN sauce), Bangor Sandwich offers two sizes (8”x10” and 10”x14”) of their rectangular specialty or build-your-own pies—and if you are a sweet-and-savory sort of person, may I recommend the Peppa Pig (red sauce, pineapple, bacon, garlic, cheese blend, and peppadews)?

Location: 25 Hammond St, Bangor, ME 04401

Freshies Deli

Good pizza at a convenience store? Wait. What? Yes, I admit I thought the same. But Freshies is different.

As the name implies, they are all about fresh food for folks on the go—making their sandwiches and pizzas on-site and with high-quality, fresh ingredients.

Their menu is loaded with drool-inducing specialty pies—even breakfast pizzas—and if I were forced to mention just one option, it’d have to be the Steak and Taters (white sauce, farm fries, cheese, bacon, steak, and scallions).

Location: 1187 Union St, Bangor, ME 04401

11 Central

This is probably one of the most upscale spots on this list for pizza—but don’t get me wrong; 11 Central isn’t stuffy or pretentious. With beautiful paintings by local artists showcased on their brick walls, an urban-chic vibe, and plentiful menus, pizza is only a portion of all this eatery has to offer.

The amount of quirky cuteness of some of the pie names matches their level of deliciousness (Dat’s a Gouda Pizza, the Dirty Hippie, and the Gold Member, for example), and I love the Lobster Artichoke pie (Maine lobster claw meat, artichoke hearts, and alfredo sauce).

And here we are again—time for me to sign off…but not without a parting shot or two (or seven). For delicious, wood-fired pizza on-the-go (literally), look for the popular Pompeii Pizza
or Abraham’s Wood Fired Pizza trucks.

If you’re feeling hungry and energetic, stop into
Smoke & Steel, where you can hurl a few axes and nosh on yummy pizza.

And of course, Bangor has the typical host of chain-style dine-in, take-out, and delivery spots, if you’re set in your ways. Take your pick: Papa John’s, Domino’s, Pizza Hut, or Uno’s.
